@JuneButterfly5@EmergingSocial1 I had the same feeling about the Takei example. How Kidd unpacked the unconscious bias people have about faking disability along with the miracle sentiment really put things in perspective
embrace their disability as it gives them a unique perspective on the world. Onto of that, they see the mainstreaming of disability as a negation of their identity, culture, history and values.
@EmergingSocial1#co575 In this weeks reading about disability perspectives, I found the section on crip theory particularly interesting. I had to check my own assumptions that people w/ disabilities want to just be “normal”. There are people who reject that notion and choose to
@Yaraa128@EmergingSocial1 Seriously Yara, this I don’t think this tech should exist! It’s wild to know that Deepfaking isn’t protected under revenge porn laws. Social media platforms need to be held accountable for this kind of abuse.
become more readily available. In the 2016 presidential election, Russian operatives were able to disrupt online African American communities through fake personas as a means to surprise voters and heighten racial tensions.
@EmergingSocial1#CO575 After listening to “Should This Exist”, I realize how scary and extensive the use of deepfakes can be. Essentially, being able to impersonate or show anyone doing or saying something they’ve never done. Furthermore, the software to create deepfakes have
@SGComm575@EmergingSocial1 I feel that google’s work culture reflects the attitude of its user privacy policy. What I mean is that the focus is on providing something for you whether it is “relevant advertising” or good food or other perks but that’s ultimately a facade for google’s economic interests.
in Google’s databanks and our usage data is then sold to companies to create targeted advertising. Basically we are being monitored and exploited on Google and its subsidiary companies.
@EmergingSocial1#co575 In this week’s read, Fuchs posits the question whether Google is good or evil. while Google and its services make life easier, it also comes at a price of privacy. For any google-related service we use, all of our online actions are recorded and indexed…
@L260Yao@EmergingSocial1 Yeah I was surprised that people can feel closer to someone just by experiencing their posts online even if they’re no longer with us.
In addition, they touched on projecting when deeper connections are formed with others and how the absence of visual cues enhances this. I think it’s worth exploring how it can be detrimental in online relationships and how the absence of both tone and visual cues create issues
@EmergingSocial1 This weeks reading, I thought it was very optimistic towards online relationships. Online relationships can be stronger and more durable than offline because they’re based more on shared interests and character qualities rather than physical.#co575
@EmergingSocial1#CO575 It’s clear that attributing the rise Trump and a “post truth era” to social media is reductive.Cultural and historical aspects such as Fox news and the 24/7 news cycle helped increase distrust in government and reactionary commentary and politics.
@medfletch Seriously, in this “age of information” it can get overwhelming. There’s so much we are exposed to online and we're left to figure out for ourselves what sources are reliable.
@pedrog3099@BigCornn510@EmergingSocial1 I haven’t thought of it that way. Fuchs thinks that Jenkins mistakenly assumes a connection between fandom and political protest but as we’ve seen with Jan.16, the cult of personality around someone such as trump can stir up protest for the worse
Adding to that, I learned that in the participatory democracy theory, since social media users don’t have ownership of the platform they use nor do they participate in the decision-making of the platform overall, it can’t be participatory
@EmergingSocial1 Participatory culture relates to social media in the creation and distribution of content on social media. However, capitalism seems to shape the way content is created in the form of likes, views, followers, etc.#co575
@Jalen_takesoff@nayeliparra25@medfletch@EmergingSocial1 I see this happening. Some poc aren’t getting recognition because the platform’s algorithm might filter their content out of search results. This is what I’m talking about https://t.co/lgprkkkguX #CO575
as well as depression reflects either my own experiences or people I’ve known. I was particularly struck when I read that the teen suicide rate surpassed the teen homicide rate in 2011.
@EmergingSocial1 In Twenge’s article, She explores the characteristics of iGen and how smartphones and social media have affected teens’ mental health as well as how they interact socially. I couldn’t help but reflect on my time in HS because what Twenge says about sleep…#CO575
