The story of the newly appointed ED at FirstBank and his relationship with FOTE is the reason why you need a Sponsor in your career.
In the corporate space, there are Mentors and there are Sponsors, and they play very different roles.
A Mentor talks with you.
A Sponsor talks about you in rooms you may never enter.
A Mentor tells you what to do.
A Sponsor does something for you.
A Mentor invests their words.
A Sponsor invests their reputation.
A Mentor helps you grow your skills, confidence and perspective.
A Sponsor recommends you for opportunities, promotions, leadership visibility or strategic projects.
I’ve seen some competent professionals struggle to progress because nobody is actively advocating for them when decisions are being made. This is why two people can be equally talented, hardworking and qualified, yet one person keeps getting accelerated opportunities while the other remains “promising.”
Good work is important, but corporate growth is not based on hard work alone. Visibility, trust, relationships and your credibility also matter.
You cannot force sponsorship. People only sponsor individuals they trust to represent them well. You have to become someone people can confidently recommend when they are absent from the room.
Sometimes the career breakthrough you need is not buried in another certification. It may simply be one credible voice saying “Give this person the opportunity, they will deliver”.
@iamcardib She said it in her own words this morning. We put it to music. Nothing added, nothing taken away. Just gave it a melody.
