@IHarrieha The idea of our work is to avoid carotene spoilage, once it is considered waste by the traditional industry and the total amount of carotenoids destroyed during the palm oil refining could nourish the worldwide demand for vitamin A
@DavidDanaci The greatest benefit of adsorption over solvent extraction for palm oil treatment is the selectivity. Palm oil is a mixture of phospholipid, fatty acids and other compounds, performing the separation by solvent extraction could lead to loss in the selectivity for the carotenes
@DavidDanaci Hi, @DavidDanaci, thank you for your inputs, very interesting questions! We performed experiments with bleaching earth, but the chemical adsorption hinders the recovery of the carotenes. In the future we aim to test other polymeric resins.
@IHarrieha The removal of carotenes is actually required for the industrial use because the dark color and typical aroma they provide is undesirable, it is called bleaching. After our process, the oil may pass through a purifying step to remove the solvent and it can be used industrially.
@RajendranArvind Hi, professor Rajendran, thank you for the kind compliment and for the interest in our research. We measured the adsortpion isotherms in batch and their behaviour was Langmuiran and best derscribed by the Jovanovich and Hill-De Boer isotherm models.
