For those who believe russia’s vast size is somehow natural — just look at this map.
It screams continual colonization and the destruction of entire ethnic groups. Today, over 65 languages in russia are endangered, and hundreds more have already disappeared. And the process was even more brutal than in the Americas, where over 90% of Indigenous people were wiped out by Eurasian diseases. In russia’s case, the Moskovians had to kill manually — with steel — because unlike in the Americas, the local populations had immunity to those diseases.
Most of Ukraine fell under their occupation only in the 1800s. Before 1600, they controlled only a small part of it. So if someone tells you that “Ukraine is historically russian,” show them this map. It’s not. Just like Finland, Poland, and many other countries — Ukraine was never inherently russian. It was simply conquered, like the rest.
This empire stops expanding only when it’s stopped by force. Not by negotiations, kind words, or “understanding” the Kremlin’s grievances. They wage war simply because they can — not because they were “provoked” by NATO, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, or whatever monster they imagine under their beds. That’s been their nature for over six centuries. And they won’t change.

🤝 Thank you to @PACE_News for adopting the relevant declaration condemning Russia’s strikes on the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra and Ukraine’s cultural heritage sites. The deliberate destruction and looting of cultural property are war crimes and require a strong international response.
⚡️CCD in collaboration with @eu_eeas , presents a joint analytical report on Russian information threats targeting Ukraine’s European future. The publication of this study coincides with the anniversary of Ukraine’s acquisition of EU candidate status four years ago.
Today, the European External Action Service and Ukraine's Center for Countering Disinformation (@CforCD) are teaming up to share a new report that takes a closer look at how Russian Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI) tries to target Ukraine’s journey towards joining the European Union. Following a devastating Russian missile strike on June 15 that shattered the administrative buildings of the iconic Dovzhenko Film Studio and destroyed a workshop containing over 100,000 unique costumes, the Kyiv Independent’s Nastia Kasinchuk joined a crowd of local residents to help clear the wreckage.
@TimothyDSnyder Dude, you have to define for whom the utopia exists as well. It is not a universal utopia, obvs. Perhaps an oligarchopia? There are many utopias of violence.
Moved to tears walking through central Kyiv and the sea of memorials to soldiers killed fighting to protect Ukraine. They are fighting for the their freedom and for the security of all of us in Europe.
New stage of the russian war
A man with no legs, who had probably experienced the reality of war, attacked police officers with a knife as they were forcibly mobilizing young men on the streets of his city.
The police were filming the whole thing while running away.

I already signed this petition two days ago calling for russia to be expelled from @UNESCO.
In March 2023, I wrote an essay setting out the legal and political arguments for kicking it out of the @UN.
The russian terrorist state must be made a pariah.

A russian FPV drone hunted down 54-year-old primary school teacher Iryna Yemelianenko in Kharkiv Oblast.
After spotting the drone, she got out of her car and tried to hide in a tree line. The drone followed her and struck.
This is who russia is killing.
Russia is recruiting Africans for troll farms and influence ops targeting Europe. From fake accounts spreading division in the Netherlands to amplifying migration fears and anti-EU sentiment, Moscow is weaponising African labour for its hybrid war.

Thousands of Poles celebrating Kupala Night near the Vistula river in Warsaw today.
The summer solstice celebration dates back to pagan times and is a festival of fire, water, fertility, love and purification including:
- Jumping over bonfires.
- Floating flower wreaths (wianki) on rivers and lakes (to predict love or marriage).
- Seeking the mythical “fern flower”
- Dancing, singing and rituals honoring the sun and elements
17,000
That is the estimated number of Ukrainian civilians currently held in Russian captivity.
Not soldiers. Civilians.
A joint report by Ukrainian civil society organisations and international partners — published June 2026 — documented 8,221 unique verified cases of unlawful detention of Ukrainian civilians by Russian forces between February 24, 2022 and December 31, 2025.
The real number is estimated at over 17,000. The gap exists because Russia systematically conceals the fact of detention and the location of those held.
Who Russia targets: local government representatives, teachers, doctors, entrepreneurs, and activists. Average age: 43. Over 1,720 documented cases involve women.
Where they are held: over 200 places of detention — official Russian prisons and colonies, and unofficial sites including basements and garages in occupied territory.
What happens to them: more than 91% of released civilians report torture, sexualised violence, and sensory deprivation through continuous confinement in sealed cells. Complete isolation — no contact with family, no lawyers, no ICRC access.
Russia justifies the detentions through unpublished quasi-legal instruments classifying civilians as combatants for “opposing the special military operation.”
“The Russian regime treats Ukrainian non-combatants as prisoners of war. This approach explicitly violates international law.” — Joint civil society report, June 2026
The report’s conclusion: Russia will not release Ukrainians voluntarily.
The recommended response: criminal prosecution, universal jurisdiction mechanisms, and targeted sanctions against the FSB, Russia’s Federal Penitentiary Service, and the Military Police of the Russian Ministry of Defence.
17,000 people. Documented. Named where possible. Waiting.
