Today the Police Unity Tour Chapter 7 embarked on their journey from Somerset, New Jersey to Washington D.C. for National police week.

Over 400 cyclist, over 50 police motorcycles, and support staff are involved in this amazing adventure.

POLICEMAN WALTER KESTERSON
The 4th LAPD Officer profiled that was awarded the Medal of Valor/killed in the line of duty, in our 2025 centennial recognition.

Officer Walter Kesterson, a 17+ year veteran of the LAPD, was working in plainclothes while assigned to Metropolitan division on February 4, 1946.  Kesterson and his partner responded to a robbery call in south Los Angeles. The two officers stopped a vehicle containing two suspects not far from the robbery scene.  One of the armed suspects opened fire, shooting Kesterson in the chest.  Kesterson returned fire killing his assailant.  Simultaneously the second suspect drew his handgun. Despite his mortal wounds, Kesterson engaged and killed the second suspect. Kesterson tragically succumbed to his gunshot wounds.  The two dead suspects were believed to have murdered a Vernon Police Officer a few days prior to murdering Officer Kesterson.  The tragic apprehension of the pair of cop-killers, and murder of Officer Kesterson occurred in a period when the LAPD did not award the Medal of Valor (1936 to 1952).  In 2007 LAPD officially recognized Officer Kesterson’s bravery, service and sacrifice by presenting the Medal of Valor to a family member.
