This week class 3/26 started their LAPD career at the Elysian Park academy. The Los Angeles Police Memorial Foundation represented by Glynn Martin, made his presentation about what the LAPMF does, its mission, and how it will be there in a time of need.
Thank you to the many recruits past and present for their support via payroll deduction. It is an integral part of the LAPMF’s funding.

The Los Angeles Police Memorial Foundation and its board of directors mourn the tragic loss of Police Officer II Bailey Magana, Serial No. 44838, who was assigned to Mission Area, and was killed early Saturday morning in an off-duty traffic collision in Santa Clarita, California. Officer Magana leaves behind a loving wife, three young children, devoted parents, siblings, and countless coworkers and friends who are grieving this unimaginable loss.
Rest in peace Officer Bailey Magana.

OFFICER JAMES PAGLIOTTI
Officer James Pagliotti was a 5-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department assigned to Metropolitan Division. On June 22, 1987, Officer Pagliotti was in plainclothes and driving an unmarked vehicle as a member of a surveillance detail conducting a burglary investigation. As the surveillance traveled through the Sylmar area of Los Angeles, a partner observed a pair of armed suspects, whom he believed were about to rob him. Officer Pagliotti’s surveillance partner broadcast the location of the suspects and exited his vehicle. Officer Pagliotti abandoned the surveillance and drove to the suspects’ location, drawing the attention of one suspect away from his partner. That suspect immediately directed gunfire at Officer Pagliotti. Both officers returned fire, striking both suspects. Officer Pagliotti was struck by gunfire from one of the suspects and died from a single gunshot wound. For his actions to protect the community and his partners, Officer Pagliotti wasposthumously awarded the Medal of Valor.

POLICEMAN EARL RIDDICK
Policeman Earl Riddick, a veteran of the United States Army, served the LAPD for two years. On April 23, 1970, Officer Riddick was off-duty and doing business at a South Western Avenue bank. While in the bank parking lot, a suspect who, moments earlier had robbed the bank and killed a security officer, approached a stolen getaway vehicle parked near Officer Riddick. Officer Reddick was shot by the robber. Though mortally wounded, Officer Riddick returned fire and struck the back glass of the getaway car. Two arriving motor officers pursued the suspect, who ultimately crashed nearby and fled on foot. Responding officers, and an air unit, searched the immediate area and discovered the robber hiding beneath a trailered boat. Another exchange of gunfire occurred resulting in the demise of the robbery suspect. The ensuing investigation revealed the suspect had previously been imprisoned for armed robbery and was believed to have engaged in a series of robberies and murders in the days prior to the murder of Officer Riddick. For his actions to protect the community, Officer Riddick was posthumously awarded the Medal of Valor.

The Los Angeles Police Memorial Foundation proudly presents its ongoing bi-weekly series honoring officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty and were awarded the Medal of Valor. We are commemorating the 12th officer in this centennial tribute, marking 100 years since the Medal of Valor's inception.
POLICEMAN ROBERT COTE
Policeman Robert Cote, a veteran of the United States Army, served the LAPD for 15 months. On July 31, 1969, Officer Cote was working alone and responded to a radio call of a robbery in progress with potential hostages at an East Hollywood variety store. Upon arrival Officer Cote exchanged gunfire with one of the two robbery suspects. Officer Cote was struck by the suspect’s gunfire. Additional responding officers shot the suspect, who at the time, was holding a store employee as a hostage. Officer Cote ultimately succumbed to the gunshot wounds sustained during the exchange of gunfire. His assailant died later at a downtown hospital. The second suspect was arrested for the murder of Officer Cote. For his actions to protect the community, Officer Cote was posthumously awarded the Medal of Valor.

Officer Oscar Joel Bryant, a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, had served the LAPD for nearly 4 years. On May 13, 1968, Officer Bryant was working alone and completing an unrelated report on South Western Avenue when he responded to a radio call of a robbery in progress at a nearby store. Upon arrival Officer Bryant stopped four suspects as they exited the store. The suspects were ordered to face away from Officer Bryant. Officer Bryant directed an adjacent store employee, who had emerged from another business, to return to the business and phone for additional officers to respond. While awaiting the arrival of back-up officers, one of the suspects turned to face Officer Bryant, drew a handgun and shot Officer Bryant. Despite his fatal wound, Officer Bryant returned fire, striking two of the suspects. Seven suspects were later arrested. For his actions to protect the community, Officer Bryant was posthumously awarded the Medal of Valor.

We are honoring our 8th Los Angeles Police Officer, who was killed in the line of duty and awarded the Medal of Honor. This biweekly recognition commemorates the 56 heroes who will never be forgotten, spanning the century from 1925 to 2025.
POLICEMAN CHARLES BOGARDUS
Policeman Charles Bogardus had served the LAPD for nearly 13 years when he and his partner responded to an April 15, 1959, robbery in progress call at a closed supermarket on Washington Blvd, where two employees were performing closing procedures. A pair of robbery suspects had forced entry to the store and confronted the employees, pistol-whipping one. Upon arrival, Officer Bogardus also forced entry to the store and immediately commenced a search for the two armedrobbers. While ascending a stairway, Officer Bogardus confronted one suspect and a struggle for control of Officer Bogardus’ handgun ensued. During the altercation, a fatal gunshot struck Officer Bogardus in the head. Officer Bogardus’ assailant and the second robbery officer were subsequently shot and killed by Officer Bogardus’ partner and by other responding LAPD officers. For his actions to protect the store employees, Policeman Bogardus was posthumously awarded the Medal of Valor.

POLICEMAN JOHN BRINNEGAR
Our 3rd beloved LAPD Officer profiled that was awarded the Medal of Valor/killed in the line of duty, in our 2025 centennial recognition.
Officer John Brinnegar, a 4-year veteran of the LAPD, was working in the Sawtelle (West LA) area of Los Angeles on September 29, 1928. Brinnegar and his partner were investigating a married couple suspected of bootlegging. The wife was taken into custody at a nearby restaurantwhere she was found with liquor. A follow-up investigation at the couple’s empty home revealed several more gallons of illegal liquor. The husband unexpectedly entered the home where he shot Officer Brinnegar. Although mortally wounded, Brinnegar returned fire, striking his assailant. Upon the arrival of Brinnegar’s partner at the home, the bootlegger admitted to shooting Officer Brinnegar. The assailant died in the home shortly after making his dying declaration. Days before Christmas, the chief of police presented Brinnegar’s widow with the deed to their family home. During the February 1929, presentation of the Medal of Valor, the Police Commission president stated, “Such an exhibition of valor is the kind of thing we continually expect of our officers.”
