In 1898, Louisiana adopted a new constitution which incorporated a “grandfather clause” into voting requirements.
It stated that a person may only vote if their father/grandfather was eligible to vote on/before January 1, 1867, disqualifying almost all Black voters.
YES: Mamdani's administration just funded New York City's first-ever pet food pantry program.
$750,000 in the FY2027 budget, specifically to help pet owners who can't afford food for their animals. Another $750,000 goes toward affordable spay/neuter services. $1.5 million total, aimed at keeping people and their pets together.
Here's why it matters: NYC animal shelters took in over 16,000 animals last year. Nearly 10,000 were strays. Another 6,500 were owner surrenders — people who loved their pets but couldn't afford to feed them or get them basic vet care, and had to give them up.
Animal welfare advocates had been pushing for this for years, asking for $15.3 million to fully fund pantries, spay/neuter clinics in every borough, and a real animal welfare office. They got a fraction of the ask, But it's the first time the city has put dedicated dollars behind the idea at all.
No family should have to choose between rent and feeding their family — pets included. This is a start.
🚨 Today's decision allowing the immediate cancellation of temporary protected status for Haitians and Syrians means more folks will lose access to employer-based health coverage and be subject to deportation (continued) ⬇️
Brionna Johnson was told she would have to end her pregnancy and undergo a hysterectomy. Instead, a 27-pound fibroid was removed while preserving her pregnancy and her ability to have children. Too often, Black women face limited options or are not heard. This outcome shows what is possible when patients are listened to and given real care. Equity in maternal care is not a luxury, it is a necessity.
We must lift the US oil blockade on Cuba.
This is economic warfare designed to suffocate an island.
Food is spoiling.
Water supply is compromised.
Healthcare services are disrupted.
End the blockade now. Grateful to all those helping deliver humanitarian aid!

Legislation requiring health insurance coverage of contraceptive related services provided by pharmacists has passed both the NYS Senate and Assembly! This prevents out of pocket costs to patients and improves uptake of these services. #GettingBusy#BirthControlAccess
This is amazing. DHS bought a warehouse in a city called Social Circle, Georgia. When the city council asked DHS how they planned to use the warehouse, DHS refused to answer.
So, the city cut off water and sewer services and put a lock on the water meter, and said that services will remain off “until ICE indicates how water and sewer to the facility will be served without exceeding the limited infrastructure capacity.”
Outstanding. We need more of this! This is how we stop fascism.
The cruel VA abortion ban undermines health care access for veterans, without exceptions even in states where abortion is legal.

While Donald Trump escalates a cruel policy designed to strangle the Cuban people, blocking oil shipments and tightening the blockade, people from around the world are converging March 20–23, alongside CODEPINK, Progressive International, The People’s Forum, and Global Health Partners in Havana. We’re bringing solar panels, medicine, and a message no sanction can touch: amor con amor se paga. You can try to blockade a country, but you cannot blockade love, and you cannot blockade solidarity. At least 108 girls between ages 7 and 12 were killed at their school in Minab. An IRGC base is nearby and was likely the target.
Initial attempts to deflect U.S./Israeli blame for the strike by claiming an Iranian misfire hit the school are undercut by video of the base also being struck. Given the location, it was most likely the Abe Lincoln that massacred these girls.
We sent a reporter to the scene, read the dispatch, a parent’s worst nightmare, below.
Folks need to understand what really happened here.
Rep. Al Green was born in 1947 in the Jim Crow South. In 2026, a sitting president, Donald Trump, posted a racist video of our former president, Barack Obama, and former First Lady Michelle Obama.
Al Green was defending Black folks’ honor, and Markwayne Mullin and others were offended by that, not the racist video.
Offended enough to manhandle a Black elder.
Trump’s administration has blown up 45 boats and killed 151 people “suspected” of smuggling drugs. No proof. No charges. No trial. Just death.
And at #SOTU he joked that “nobody wants to fish” because they’re terrified.
Not funny. Just brutal state violence.
A reminder before tonight's State of the Union Address 🚨
While this administration claims to have the concerns of women and families at a forefront, we urge you to remember that in one year, the Trump-Vance administration has:
