What an absolutely embarrassment this World Baseball Classic has been for Team USA and the United States. How does the greatest baseball nation on Earth. The ones who invented this beautiful sport, get absolutely humiliated like this? With a team stacked with superstars, and yet we look this lifeless and this detached?

It is horrifying and humiliating to be an American and to witness our great team act like the World Baseball Classic is just another spring training camp, and not proper a chance to represent the country on their chest with pride. With situations of players putting self over country, downplaying the tournament, to being straight up classless to opponents, and ultimately to the biggest managerial blunder in U.S. Baseball history.

Since 2006, the inception of the World Baseball Classic. The United States have treated this tournament like a glorified exhibition game. Just part of the Spring Training routine. Just buttoned-up, corporate nonsense. We send stars who treat this tournament like a resume line, while other countries such as the Dominicans, Japanese, even the Italians, play send their stars who play with raw national pride, emotion, and heart. As an American who loves sports, and this country. I want the USA to match that passion, that hunger. Not this cold, professional detachment where our guys act like they’re above all of it.

In this year’s iteration of the World Baseball Classic. We finally loaded up Team USA’s roster with the best pitching staff ever assembled, and the most insane offense lineup in baseball. The entire team is filled with outstanding talent. On paper, we should be unstoppable. Yet, the players with their above-all attitudes, kills the vibe that this team brings to the world stage.

Tarik Skubal bails Team USA mid-tournament for Tigers camp after one game start against Great Britain. Dictating that his personal needs are above his country, ditching after one start like it’s no big deal. Then looks foolish and cries out loud, saying his decision was a miscalculation on what he believed the WBC meant, then proceeds to still ditch our boys. Why even bother to be in Team USA at all? Bryce Harper, who downplays the World Baseball Classic mid tournament in a postgame interview, stating, “WBC is great, but it’s not the Olympics.” Not understanding that he is here now, with USA across his chest. Read the room, and show some pride and play some ball. Say these opinions after we lift the trophy. Cal Raleigh gets classless toward his own club teammate who plays with Team Mexico. I understand we are in competition, but these egotistical gestures are what makes these flaws in our national team feel like an excruciating failure in the grand scheme of things. These are supposed to be leaders, and yet. they come off as self-important, too cool, too corporate. Like the tournament is beneath them unless it’s convenient. And to those players, I respectfully and bluntly say this:

If you cannot fully commit to play for your country. Step aside, and let someone who will step up and do so. Who will also provide a more meaningful outcome and build up a more genuine club-house culture. Not this resume-building, unserious, corporate bullshit we have right now.

The tip of the iceberg of all of this, which showcased the entire fanbase of Team USA of all the flaws of which were in place from the beginning? Was the final game for USA in pool play, against Italy.
