DPP secures 7-year sentence in Baringo endangered wildlife trophy case.
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has successfully secured a conviction and a seven-year custodial sentence in a wildlife crime case involving the possession and dealing in endangered wildlife trophies, specifically, four elephant tusks worth Ksh. 2,820,000/-.
The judgment was delivered by Principal Magistrate Hon. C. Ateya at the Kabarnet Law Courts, where the accused, Justin Kandie, was found guilty under Section 92(2) as read with Section 92(4) of the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act, 2013.
The case, prosecuted by Counsel Sidney Koech, was proved beyond reasonable doubt through prosecution evidence and testimony from six witnesses, including officers from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), the National Police Service (NPS), and a researcher from the National Museums of Kenya.
The court heard that the offence was committed in June 2024 at Katibel Village, Kaptiei Location, Baringo North Sub-County, where a multi-agency team conducted a successful sting operation leading to the arrest of the accused while in possession of the illegal trophies.
In her sentencing remarks, Hon. Ateya emphasized the grave national and ecological consequences of wildlife crimes. Aggravating factors included expert findings by the National Museums of Kenya which confirmed that the recovered tusks represented at least four elephants, highlighting the severe environmental impact of the offence.

Before dating any woman,
I asked my mom what I should look for in a woman.
I thought she would say:
Low body count
No guy friends
Don’t go to clubs
But instead she said this:
