🚨 OKC RANKED DEAD LAST IN PUBLIC TRANSIT. GOOD NEWS: WE’RE THROWING MORE MONEY AT IT. 😂

Oklahoma City reportedly ranked 50th out of the 50 largest U.S. cities for public transportation.

And apparently, change is coming.

Because if there is one thing government knows how to do when something isn’t working, it’s invest more money and assure us things will get better.

To be fair, the money isn’t a new response to this ranking. Voters approved MAPS 4 in 2019, and approximately $97 million is allocated for transit improvements.

So what are we getting?

🚌 $61 million for two additional Bus Rapid Transit lines.

🚦 $13.4 million for additional buses and traffic-signal prioritization.

🚏 $11.2 million to improve about 500 bus stops.

📋 $5.5 million for planning and land acquisition.

There are legitimate improvements underway. The city projects the new northeast/south Bus Rapid Transit corridor will serve about 2,700 weekday riders and connect riders with approximately 50,000 jobs.

Maybe the investment works.

But when your transit system ranks dead last among America’s 50 largest cities, taxpayers should probably ask more than:

“How much are we spending?”

What caused OKC to rank last?

Which problems does this $97 million actually fix?

How will we measure whether it worked?

And most importantly:

At what point do we stop measuring improvement by how much money we spend and start measuring it by what we actually get for the money?

Because $97 million is a lot of bus fare.

And when you’re #50 out of 50, there’s really only one direction left to go.
