Climate politics in Europe isn’t decided by the loudest voices — but by “conditional middle” (33% of voters) who prioritise costs and benefits of the policies
Move them — and 4/15 climate policies with majority support becomes 10/15
The real battle is about fairness and design.
Climate politics sounds increasingly polarised. But in Europe, support for climate isn’t driven by die-hard supporters or opponents. It tends to be shaped by a large “conditional middle” (33%).
See our new paper on opinions of EU citizens about climate policy
• Around 12% openly reject climate policy.
• Many people focus on specific sectors like waste, transport, energy.
• Only about 25% mention concrete policy instruments such as carbon pricing or regulation.
"Opinions of EU citizens about climate policy in their own words", with @IvanVSavin. Results from a public survey in 13 EU countries. Inadequate understanding of policy instruments & details may contribute to limited public support for climate policy.
