Just to be clear and without quips - in the 1988 Budget Nigel Lawson, Tory Chancellor under Thatcher, announced "I propose in future to apply the same rate of tax to income and capital gains alike." which after his reforms were 25% basic rate and 40% higher rate adding "there is little economic difference between income and capital gains...it is by no means clear why one should be taxed more heavily than the other." He also introduced indexation and rebased gains to 1982. Equal rates applied for 20 years from April 1988 until changed by Labour's Alastair Darling to a flat rate of 18% and taper relief and indexation allowances were scrapped from April 2008.

Paul Nowak is replacing Frances O’Grady, his predecessor at the TUC, who was appointed a Bank of England director in 2019 under a Tory government.

She in turn replaced Unison chief Dave Prentis, also appointed under a Tory govt. He replaced Brendan Barber (TUC), who replaced Bill Morris (TGWU), who replaced Gavin Laird (appointed under Thatcher) etc etc. This is not new!

Latest: Banks have £915billion of our money in savings accounts paying average 1.64% and £305bn in accounts paying 0% - average 1.23%. They can deposit that with BoE which pays Bank Rate 3.75%. Over last 12 months banks made £28.5bn profit on our money! (BoE Table A6.1, 29/7/26)

Remarkable story in Telegraph revealing just how useless recent Tory governments were:
A secret Whitehall report found that more than £28bn in foreign aid and Covid-19 loans was handed to terrorists, hostile states and gangsters!
The misappropriation of taxpayer funds from 2015 to 2021, includes millions sent to the Islamic State and Russia.
Those responsible remain unpunished and the dossier was buried to spare official embarrassment.

Money doesn't guarantee election success in the UK. In 1997, Sir James Goldsmith spent about £40m on the Referendum Party's campaign - a modern record, & the equivalent of about £80m today. The Referendum Party got about 2.6% of the vote, and no seats.
