The gestalt hits Bexhill-on-Sea: "a spacious hall, lighted with 10,000 brilliant lamps ... all the dark problems of life wore a different aspect ... a reform so just in principle, so easy in application, and so pregnant with promise of rich result ..." (From Land Values Jan 1907)
George Cadbury: “I consider the question of Taxation of Land Values of more importance than any other. It is impossible for England to maintain her position among the nations with a population deteriorating in physique by living in crowded, unhealthy buildings in towns.” (1909)
The Land Song is famous amongst Georgists. It's not easy to find. The land campaign made it a hit in the UK after the rejection of the People's Budget. (Land Values, January 1910)
"The 'single taxer' is a strange phenomenon for the Socialist to encounter. ... There is nothing to equal the contempt which the Socialist lavishes on the orthodox politician except the contempt which the 'single taxer' lavishes on him."
(From Land Values July 1912)
@watling_samuel@ThomasBHall@Biggiethelad1@SimonMagus@DanNeidle@larsiusprime In the end this is all about the underlying ideas of Henry George, JS Mill, Adam Smith and others. If you dismiss them, it is difficult to understand the Budget crisis. If you take them seriously, and see that they were taken seriously in 1909, it makes much more sense.
@Biggiethelad1@ThomasBHall@watling_samuel@SimonMagus@DanNeidle@larsiusprime I studied this period of British history (from 1906) and of European history (from 1870) at Advanced level. I've been studying Georgism since 2008. I started publishing articles in 2019 and I've been working on this project since 2023.
