How violent is Israel towards Palestine?

Below are list of military operations conducted by the Israeli army in the past two decades. Please note the death ratio & civilian casualties.

1. Operation Rainbow (May-June 2004)

Operation was conducted by Israel to locate & destroy tunnels through which weapons are allegedly smuggled into Gaza. Human Rights Watch concluded that the "IDF has consistently exaggerated & mischaracterised the threat from smuggling tunnels to justify the demolition of homes".

- 60 Palestinians killed, 17 were children.
- 13 Israeli soldiers killed.

2. Operation Days of Penitence (Sept-Oct 2004)

Israel launched this operation, which was aimed to prevent firing of homemade Palestinian "rockets" into the Israel town of Sderot. Israel accused UNRWA of being complicit to allow its vehicles to transport rockets. UNRWA denied this & subsequently Israel retracted the accusation.

- 107 Palestinians killed, 27 of them were 18 years old & below
- 5 Israelis killed

3. Operation Summer Rains & Operation Autumn Clouds (June-Nov 2006)

Israel launched these operations following an attack 2 days earlier by Palestinian armed groups whom killed 2 Israeli soldiers & captured another corporal. The Palestinian armed groups demanded the release of Palestinian women & children from Israeli jails in exchange for the captured soldier.

- More than 400 Palestinians killed including unarmed civilians. 80 children were killed.
- 2 Israeli civilians killed

5. Operation Hot Winter (Feb-March 2008)

Israel launched this operation in response to Qassam "rockets" fired from the Gaza Strip by Hamas onto Israelis civilians (though no deaths or injuries were officially reported).

- 112 Palestinians killed, 52 were civilians.
- 3 Israeli killed, including 1 civilian.

6. Operation Cast Lead (Dec 2008-Jan 2009)

Israel & Hamas had agreed upon a ceasefire, which was largely successful. This prevailed until November 4, whereby Israeli soldiers staged a raid into the Gaza Strip, killing 6 Hamas members. This attack ended the ceasefire, subsequently led to operation Cast Lead by Israel.

- Some 1,400 Palestinians were killed, including some 300 children, 115 women, 85 men aged over fifty.
- 9 Israeli killed, including 3 civilians

7. Operation Pillar of Defence (November 2012)

Israel stated that the aim of the operation was in response to the launch of "rockets" by Gaza militants towards Israel.

- 167 Palestinians killed, including 87 who are not involved in the hostilities.
- 6 Israelis were killers, including 4 civilians.

8. Operation Protective Edge (July-August 2014)

Israel accused Hamas on the abduction & killing of 3 Israeli teenagers. This prompted series of Israeli air strikes, and Hamas retaliated by firing rockets. Subsequently Israel launched Operation Protective Edge.

- 2251 Palestinians killed, 65% were civilians according to UN, more than 500 children
- 73 Israelis killed, 6 were civilians.
