So I went to uni wanting to be a teacher, but now all I want to do is travel the world with the person I love

My husband told me to get out of his house because I refused to lend his younger brother $4,000. I left that night with our daughter. The next morning, he called me crying because his mother had finally told him what I discovered about the money.

His brother had called him three times that week, asking for help with rent. Apparently, he was behind on payments and his landlord had threatened to start the eviction process.

I understood that he was in trouble, but my husband and I weren’t exactly swimming in money ourselves. We had a mortgage, a car payment, groceries, and a daughter whose school tuition was due in a few weeks.

When my husband asked me for the money, I told him we couldn’t afford it.

He looked at me like I’d insulted him.

“It’s my younger brother. I’m not going to let him end up on the street when we can help.”

I reminded him that we had already lent his brother $1,500 the previous year. We never got it back.

“That was different,” he said.

“How?”

“Because he’s family.”

I was so tired of that answer.

For almost a year, my husband’s work had been inconsistent. I had picked up extra shifts at work to keep our bills current, and I was the one who made sure our daughter’s school expenses were covered. I never held that over his head, but I wasn’t going to pretend we had money we didn’t have.

That evening, his mother called while we were eating dinner. He told her I had refused to help his brother.

She said, “I don’t understand why you married a woman who watches your family struggle when she has money sitting in the bank.”

I put my fork down.

“That money is our emergency savings. We need it for our own bills.”

My husband slammed his hand on the table.

“Stop making me look like a failure in front of my mother!”

I stared at him.

“You’re doing that yourself. I’m just refusing to lie about our finances.”

He stood up and told me that if I couldn’t respect his family, I should leave.

So I took our daughter upstairs, packed enough clothes for a few days, and drove to my sister’s house.

He didn’t follow us.

At 11:38 p.m., he texted, “Don’t bother coming back until you apologize to my mother.”

I put my phone down and went to sleep.

At least, I tried to.

Because there was something about his brother’s request that still didn’t make sense to me.

@Courrrrrrtney You will always pack too much for the first few times of going somewhere! Just pack what makes you feel confident and comfortable and then the next few times you'll just end up taking less and less! Trust your gut!
