So, The Odyssey. Lol. It’s good, maybe Nolan’s best, and not even slightly “woke.” The right-wing hysteria is amazingly detached from reality.
It’s a relentlessly masculine film, visually similar to Troy (2004) at times, but starker and bleaker, less flamboyant and less feminist. Circe, Calypso, Charybdis etc. are classic Nolan female chaos dragons. Penelope’s weaving is not dwelled upon.
The costumes look good. The soundscape is relentless roaring and clanging that rings in your ears when you wander out of the theater feeling slightly overwhelmed by three hours of torchlit Mycenaean brutality.
The brief presence of several black actors and one transsexual feels utterly natural in a mythological setting of seafaring travelers, and the fits of neurosis over it are extremely embarrassing for champions of the Master Race, whose ideological fanaticism and general hostility to aesthetic values has now exceeded the wildest excesses of left-wing media critique.
Absolute bombshell. Data reveals someone made a massive 580 MILLION dollar trade on oil exactly 15 minutes BEFORE Donald Trump posted his tweet about pausing the Iran war. Someone on the inside just made a life changing fortune. The corruption is blatant.
That scene in Lost (2004–2010) when Sawyer tells Jack about the stranger he met in a Sydney bar… only for Jack to realize it was his father’s final night alive. That’s when it hits this show is playing a much bigger game.
Sometimes you just watch peak at 4am on a random Wednesday in october….
Cant even begin to describe how much I loved this. I couldnt predict a single thing and I have so many questions still, but wow this was right down my alley. What started off as this sort of bloody mary creepy child’s game with The Empty Man spiralled into an absolutely insane series of occult and cosmic horror-like events that just kept unraveling itself deeper and deeper. And apart from the story itself, this movie from a technical aspect was so top tier, using the camera and effects in so many ways that emphasized every feeling that these characters were going through. You could really see the effect of paranoia and the psychological toll that the camara work added to this film and the sound design was just as good. This is something you definitely have to watch a second time to fully grasp and even then idk if you can. What a brilliant film. I gotta read the graphic novel now.
Might be the single most beautiful meditation on death I've ever seen put to screen.
Fear guides us to avoid confronting it. Only by welcoming it in love can we ensure a kindness will be found.
I wrote about what 28 YEARS LATER teaches us about death, love and co-existence for @NextBestPicture, unpacking Boyle and Garland's digital provocations and disarmingly emotional horrors. One of the best movies of the year:

Wer kennt sie nicht, die zweite Seite einer Medaille, die dem Licht abgewandt ist und deshalb auch als „Wolfsseite im Schafspelz“ bezeichnet wird. (1/2)
