By initially denying COVID-19’s airborne transmission and then flip-flopping on this stance, the authorities have created an environment of confusion. The emphasis on handwashing, despite clear evidence of the virus’s airborne nature, and the inconsistent recommendations regarding masks further contribute to this uncertainty. In this scenario, Mischel's theory suggests that people are more likely to rely on pre-existing beliefs or biases, leading to a range of responses, from heightened anxiety to a disregard for changing guidelines.

The use of the term 'mild' to describe COVID-19 symptoms is another striking example. Originally referring to the extent of syncytial formation in the upper respiratory tract, this term was co-opted to describe the Omicron variant's effects, misleadingly suggesting a lack of severity. This oversimplification, obscuring the virus's significant impacts on the brain, metabolism, and digestion, aligns with Mischel's ideas on uncertainty. In the absence of clear information, the public may downplay the seriousness of the disease, based on the misguided belief that 'mild' equates to 'harmless'.

This strategic ambiguity in communication may serve various purposes for the government, from shifting public focus away from systemic inadequacies to maintaining control over the narrative. However, it also exacerbates the public health challenges, leaving individuals unsure of how to best protect themselves and others.

Understanding the government's approach through the lens of Mischel's Uncertainty Theory highlights the urgent need for clear, consistent, and evidence-based communication. I had an appointment for today at 230pm. I received a text message that I was up-to-date on my vaccines. So I called to make my case.

Pharmacist: I'm sorry but you don't qualify, right now. You need to be moderate or severe.

Me: Can you give me examples of conditions that might qualify?

Pharmacist: Undergoing treatment for cancer.

Me: So I have to wait to get infected by SARS-CoV-2, and then wait for it to accelerate oncogenesis until I have diagnosed cancer requiring treatment before you'll allow me to get the same shot that I got 8 weeks ago, that can drastically lower my risk of complications. The same vaccine that you have in large supply and that you said nobody wanted. The latest data suggest 2 shots are really necessary for a robust effect. We all initially had 3 shots to establish our "primary series." That's all I'm aiming to do.

Pharmacist: There's nothing I can do. I'm just following the guidelines.

One of the more unscientific things I’ve ever done early on in the pandemic was to begin supplementation with CoQ10 just in case I contracted asymptomatic Covid & developed mitochondrial dysfunction under the hood. It’s akin to taking lutein before any macular degeneration (which my optometrist admitted to doing as well, with no evidence of efficacy — just based on theory & hope & evidence of safety/low risk).

I’m not sure why I’m sharing this other than to show you that more education doesn’t always mean we make decisions solely based on printed information. We make inferences. Many times we get those things wrong, but during uncertain times with limited information, I think we’re often right for thinking through problems using logic and reason.

Just be wary of people selling supplements and claiming you can overcome these problems with pills. I grow more skeptical of this possibility by the day.

The best way to avoid this condition is to avoid infection. You don’t want this. It’ll ruin your active life.

Today, there were four attacks against three separate commercial vessels operating in international waters in the southern Red Sea. These three vessels are connected to 14 separate nations. The Arleigh-Burke Class destroyer USS CARNEY responded to the distress calls from the ships and provided assistance.

At approximately 9:15 a.m. Sanaa time, the CARNEY detected an anti-ship ballistic missile attack fired from Houthi controlled areas of Yemen toward the M/V UNITY EXPLORER, impacting in the vicinity of the vessel. UNITY EXPLORER is a Bahamas flagged, U.K. owned and operated, bulk cargo ship crewed by sailors from two nations. The CARNEY was conducting a patrol in the Red Sea and detected the attack on the UNITY EXPLORER.

At approximately 12 p.m., and while in international waters, CARNEY engaged and shot down a UAV launched from Houthi controlled areas in Yemen. The drone was headed toward CARNEY although its specific target is not clear. We cannot assess at this time whether the Carney was a target of the UAVs. There was no damage to the U.S. vessel or injuries to personnel.

In a separate attack at approximately 12:35 p.m., UNITY EXPLORER reported they were struck by a missile fired from Houthi controlled areas in Yemen. CARNEY responded to the distress call. While assisting with the damage assessment, CARNEY detected another inbound UAV, destroying the drone with no damage or injuries on the CARNEY or UNITY EXPLORER. UNITY EXPLORER reports minor damage from the missile strike.

At approximately 3:30 p.m. the M/V NUMBER 9 was struck by a missile fired from Houthi controlled areas in Yemen while operating international shipping lanes in the Red Sea. The Panamanian flagged, Bermuda and U.K. owned and operated, bulk carrier reported damage and no casualties.

At approximately 4:30 p.m., the M/V SOPHIE II, sent a distress call stating they were struck by a missile. CARNEY again responded to the distress call and reported no significant damage. While en route to render support, CARNEY shot down a UAV headed in its direction. SOPHIE II is a Panamanian flagged bulk carrier, crewed by sailors from eight countries.

These attacks represent a direct threat to international commerce and maritime security. They have jeopardized the lives of international crews representing multiple countries around the world. We also have every reason to believe that these attacks, while launched by the Houthis in Yemen, are fully enabled by Iran. The United States will consider all appropriate responses in full coordination with its international allies and partners.
