We spent decades teaching people that cancer is mostly bad luck, bad genes, or bad habits.
Then you find out 2.3 million cases in a single year were attributable to infections.
Infections were responsible for 2.3 million new cancer cases in 2024, 12% of total global cases that year, a study has found.

Ulcers were long blamed on stress and lifestyle.
Barry Marshall suspected H. pylori, a spiral bacterium.
With no suitable animal model available, he drank a bacterial culture himself and developed severe gastritis, not an ulcer.
The experiment showed H. pylori could inflame a healthy stomach.
Further studies established its role in ulcers: treating the infection could prevent recurrence.
Marshall and Warren shared the 2005 Nobel Prize.

Genomic sequencing shows that the Ebola virus from Nigeria’s recently reported only imported case is highly similar to that from Kenya’s @MOH_Kenya reported first imported case, differing by only one mutation.
My thanks to the sequencing teams at @NCDCgov and the Institute of Genomics and Global Health @RedeemersUni , Ede, and to @christian_happi for this excellent work.
