My time as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was an experience that shaped who I am today.

Because anti-Mormon literature was so prevalent in my mission many lessons would devolve into a Bible-bashing session. We would get invited into a home by a seemingly-interested individual, only to get ambushed by a pastor or religious studies major.

These lessons would quickly become contentious and argumentative. My trainer would always tell me "Elder, we don't Bash with people. But when we Bash, we Bash to win!" At first I tried to join in. But I quickly learned that there was no winners in these discussions, only anger and frustration on both sides. That spirit of contention would linger on us for the rest of the day, and make the Work incredibly difficult.

After about a year I started to notice some interesting things; those who were critical of The Church and our message focused on trying to undermine or disprove our message. They never offered an alternative. Their whole goal was to "disprove Mormonism". It was never to try to draw us closer to Jesus Christ.

After about a year in the mission field I intentionally shifted my approach with those who were critical of our message. Joseph Smith taught:

“The fundamental principles of our religion are the testimony of the apostles and prophets concerning Jesus Christ, that he died, was buried, and rose on the third day, and ascended into heaven. All other things which pertain to our religion are only appendages to it.”

I started trying to pull any lesson or discussion that was devolving into a bash session back to Jesus Christ. I tried to find common ground and invite others to study and pray. The lesson still usually ended in a dropped contact, but that spirit of contention wouldn't stick around.

Twenty years later, and critics of the Church haven't changed their tactics. Many pose as individuals who seem interested in a discussion, draw you in, and then ambush you with one of a dozen tired, debunked tropes in an attempt to get you to abandon your Faith. There is never an invitation to attend Church with them, never an invitation to read or study Scripture, never a reasonable alternative offered. It's all about destroying your belief system, never about drawing you closer to Jesus Christ.

In 3 Nephi 11:29-30 Christ teaches:

29 For verily, verily I say unto you, he that hath the spirit of contention is not of me, but is of the devil, who is the father of contention, and he stirreth up the hearts of men to contend with anger, one with another.

30 Behold, this is not my doctrine, to stir up the hearts of men with anger, one against another; but this is my doctrine, that such things should be done away.

President Russell M. Nelson taught in his Conference Address "Peacemakers Needed":

"Before His death, the Savior commanded His Twelve Apostles to love one another as He had loved them. And then He added, “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”

The Savior’s message is clear: His true disciples build, lift, encourage, persuade, and inspire—no matter how difficult the situation. True disciples of Jesus Christ are peacemakers."
