@TheRising_Moon Great article, well written. HMRC should make the online platform responsible for all VAT regardless of whether seller is UK domestic or foreign.
@Ye_Olde_Holborn@10DowningStreet Worked in Right2Buy at LA 20yrs ago, the wife would report violence, LA rehoused her/kids, then both wife and husband can put in for a Right2Buy for each property. Not all of these were false, a lot of genuine women terrified out there, but loopholes are there for exploiting.
@peterrhague VAT on public charging is 20%, home charging is 5%. HMRC lost a case last mth that means public charging can be at 5% but they are appealing it. https://t.co/8saCGb1BaU
@fentonstevens EU passport still has to go through the UK customs booth, EU passport doesn't reduce the queue. This is a staffing problem/Border Force issue. Try flying from Nice to Geneva and you'll see an EU passport means nothing when there are no Douanes to check passports.
@_jaylawrence@PolemicTMM But no 2 airports do it the same way, agree in theory get finger printed before the rush. The issue is the e-gates don't seem to work and customs still need to stamp the passport and no consistency at all, agree this is a tech issue that needs fixing fast.
@TrisOsborneMP My p/kwh cost in France is €0.1983 (19p) with EDF, my p/kwh in UK is 28.62p also with EDF. My standing charge is 56.76p p/day in UK (£17 p/mth) and in France it is €15 (£15 p/mth). France not affected by Iran war but UK is? Maybe the UK energy market is broken.
@anon_opin You can buy Cadbury choc in B&M stores, it's made in Australia and no palm oil and tastes like Cadbury used to (ie, has high Coco solids), often cheaper than UK products despite made/coming from Australia.
@MagistratesBlog@BBC The French used to collect it with the Council tax, you could opt out and get a lower council tax bill, it was scrapped altogether by Macron 3yrs ago and now funded partly via VAT receipts/government funds.
@HammettRoger@SimonCalder Geneva isn't great, but is 5* next to Bordeaux. Like most airports, GVA seems to have only 2 border staff at any time, like most airports nowadays, but Bordeaux don't even want you there, 4 plastic picnic chairs is all you get to sit on, even Bergerac is better than Bordeaux.
@moving_charlie Been struggling since PE loaded it with debt and sold off all their property assets, classic PE move, no surprise. Reeves taxes not helped but Mozzies was going down since it bought McColls (stupid move other than to create more lovely debt for the PE vampires to feast on).
@jamescl25847951@rcolvile Or fit in with child obesity strategy, McDs will do well with this VAT cut, other than blip inflation, short VAT cuts like this are more hassle for the trader rather than driving more businesses your way (if it affects footfall at all).
@dresserman When the system recognises a known thief/violent customer, what next? Staff can't approach them, can't stop them thieving or muscle them out the door, so what's the point of it all?
@BenRamanauskas Haha, funny but you make a valid point about it targeting UK families, but on serious side, tourists can avail of this tax cut funded by the UK taxpayer.
@PolemicTMM It was a nightmare with EatOut2HelpOut, prices didn't always drop, Costa out their prices up at the time. For 3mths pubs aren't reprinting menus, re-coding tills and VAT codes on food items will take time to do and then all again 3mths later.
@darrenpjones I had performance related pay when I worked in the civil service 30 years ago, rises based on my boss liking me, targets were massaged, bosses scared to not give rises or else unions kicked off, discrimination, etc.
@UKLabour Also how does targeting children meals only fit with healthy eating/obesity, adverts banned on TV for fast food yet McDs can avail of this VAT reduction.
