ILA-NILDS Certificate Course will equip new trade experts for Africa - Professor Olawuyi, SAN
International law expert and President of the International Law Association, Nigeria has commended the National Institute of Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) for its great leadership and collaboration in organizing the upcoming Certificate Of Advanced Studies in International Trade Law Course, with a focus on AfCFTA Law and Policy in Africa.
The Senior Advocate of Nigeria who is also Chairperson of the United Nations Working Group on Business and Human Rights made this statement in Abuja during his courtesy visit to the Office of the Director General of NILDS, Professor Abubakar O. Sulaiman.
The visit also heralded the signing of a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) establishing the advanced certificate course. The signing ceremony was witnessed by key officials from both institutions. Representing NILDS were Professor M. T. Ladan, Director of the AfCFTA Law and Policy Programme Division; Dr. S. Danwanka, Director of Legal Affairs; and Dr. Doris, Technical Assistant to the Director General. ILA-Nigeria was represented by two Executive Committee members.
This Certificate of Advanced Studies in International Trade course is designed to equip legal professionals, policymakers, and legislators with the critical knowledge and skills required to navigate the complex legal framework of the AfCFTA. The partnership leverages ILA's and NILDS' legislative mandate to build capacity for effective implementation and maximization of the continent's vast trade potential.
According to Professor Olawuyi, “With a blend of expert faculty from Nigeria and beyond, the course will focus on the core sources and principles of international trade law, the practical challenges that limit their effective design and implementation especially in the context of AfCFTA; as well as innovative approaches and skillsets required to negotiate win-win international trade instruments in an increasingly globalized world.” He noted that the course will also address hot topics and trends that are particularly important for Nigeria, including treaty implementation, trade remedies and dispute settlement.
He noted that the course is composed of intensive in-class sessions and free participation for registered course participants at the ILA Nigeria International Law Conference on illicit financial flows.
