Wetter und Klima:
AMOC – der Atlantische Umwälzstrom – könnte zusammenbrechen. Ohne diese Sensoren merken wir es erst wenn es passiert. Das würde Europas Klima dramatisch verändern – kältere Winter, extremere Stürme.
El Niño:
Ohne Pazifik-Sensoren können Wissenschaftler El-Niño-Ereignisse nicht mehr rechtzeitig vorhersagen. El Niño verursacht Dürren in Asien und Afrika, Überschwemmungen in Amerika – Millionen Menschen sind betroffen.
Fischerei:
Fischer weltweit verlieren Daten über Meerestemperaturen und Strömungen – die bestimmen wo Fische sind.
Militär:
U-Boot-Erkennung und Unterwassernavigation basieren teilweise auf Ozeandaten. Kein Zufall dass Russland und China ihre Meeresüberwachung gerade ausbauen.
Das größte Problem:
Diese Daten sind unersetzbar. Wenn das Netzwerk weg ist fehlen Jahrzehnte an kontinuierlichen Messungen. Man kann nicht zurückgehen und nachmessen.

A massive nuclear waste tomb in the Pacific is beginning to crack and leak.

The Runit Dome, constructed in the late 1970s on a remote island in the Marshall Islands, was built to contain over 120,000 tons of radioactive debris left behind by U.S. nuclear testing. Among the waste is plutonium-239, a highly dangerous isotope that remains radioactive for more than 24,000 years.

The dome stretches roughly 377 feet (115 meters) across and was never properly sealed at the base. Instead, it rests directly on porous coral, allowing groundwater to flow freely beneath it.

Now, rising sea levels and increasingly powerful storms are stressing the structure. Cracks have formed in the concrete, and scientists have already detected elevated radiation levels in the surrounding soil and water.

While the current leaks are still considered relatively minor, experts warn that as oceans continue to rise, the risk of a much larger release will grow.

Built as a temporary fix decades ago, the Runit Dome now stands as a stark reminder: the radioactive waste sealed inside it will remain hazardous long after our civilizations are gone.

Crazy that this is getting barely any coverage. This year’s European Press Prize was just awarded to an investigative report by the Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant. It is entitled “What the Wounds Tell” and in it the journalists Maud Effting and Willem Feenstra document the cases of 114 children in Gaza under the age of 15 who were struck by a single bullet to the head or chest. Almost all of them died or were left severely disabled. They chose to document only the cases of boys and girls under the age of 15 (though often much younger: aged 3, 4 or 7) because these are children who can be immediately identified as such. “A single bullet in these parts of the body is a clear indication that these children were deliberately targeted“, the two journalists write.

It’s very telling that not a single one of his relatives have made a public appearance since his death. Not even his parents. They’re not going to the White House to meet Trump or hang out at MAGA events. They grieve in private like normal people while she’s soaked up every ounce of publicity that she can get. What an odd situation. Seems like his family wants to separate themselves from her.
