Illuminating the U.S. Embassy in Bern to mark 250 years of American independence. Celebrating the enduring values of liberty, freedom, and democracy that have inspired generations. 🇺🇸
In a perfect Stateside Catholicism, a Chicago-born Pope's Letter to mark US' 250th would've been read at every single weekend Mass, coast to coast....
In reality, 5% "circ" would exceed expectation.

Arriving in Castel Gandolfo, just southeast of Rome, Pope Leo XIV briefly appeared at the balcony of the Apostolic Palace to greet the faithful gathered in Piazza della Libertà. He thanked them for their warm welcome and reaffirmed the importance of coming together as brothers and sisters.

Pope Leo XIV had dinner July 4 at the private residence of U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See Brian Burch, the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See said.
The dinner took place at the ambassador’s residence on the Janiculum Hill in Rome on the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence.
“I am deeply honored to celebrate this special day with a fellow American and the Bishop of Rome,” Burch said.
The pope’s visit came after a day trip to Lampedusa, where he addressed migration and prayed for those who have died crossing the Mediterranean. Images of Pope Leo XIV standing on the island’s rocks and looking out over the sea circulated widely after the visit.
After returning to the Vatican, the pope went to the ambassador’s residence for the evening meal. Photos released by the embassy showed Pope Leo XIV with Burch and members of his family.
On X, the official account of the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See posted that “the Ambassador and his family presented the Holy Father with a USA World Cup jersey, a commemorative Freedom 250 baseball, and a homemade apple pie. Pope Leo confirmed he is rooting for the country of his birth in the World Cup.”

As much as I love Rome, it’s always good to go home. This weekend is special, of course, because it’s the 250th Anniversary of our beloved country. We celebrate our independence from an earthly ruler whom our founding fathers considered to be tyrannical, but our founding fathers also realized that they are dependent upon God, who takes care of this one nation under God. Happy Fourth of July, folks! @thegnewsroom
Fulton Sheen's patriotism was honored in a special way when (as the first clergyman) he received the Distinguished Service Medal. The photos from the occasion are by D.L. Refowich, Atlantic City, NJ., through the kindness of The American Legion National Headquarters.
The Stateside Catholic Prayer par excellence for every civic occasion, above all this 250th, US pastors and faithful are warmly encouraged to re-up the 1791 text of this Church’s Founding Father at Semiquin Weekend’s Masses & events 🇺🇸

A grace-filled feast of Sts Peter & Paul at the Vatican with @Pontifex and our @StThomasUniv delegation! Blessed to pray at the tomb of St Peter and concelebrate Mass with the imposition of the Pallium to the new archbishops. United around the Successor of Peter, we renewed our mission to form leaders rooted in Christ and faithful to the Gospel.
Pope Leo XIV has called on Christians around the world to prepare together for the Year 2033, marking 2,000 years since Christ’s Redemption. Addressing a delegation from the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, the Holy Father said that in an age marked by war, polarization, and division, Christians must become “a credible sign of peace.” He urged greater cooperation among Christian communities, rooted in the Nicene Creed, to witness to the Risen Christ and help build a more peaceful and united world.
This comes one day after the delegation’s presence in the Vatican at the Pope’s Holy Mass on the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul.
I’m at the North American College, the American seminary in Rome. From here you can see a statue of St. Peter, as well as the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica, because for us, St. Peter lives. St. Peter’s mission continues! @thegnewsroom
