7 JANUARY 1942 – BATTLE OF BATAAN BEGINS
After the Japanese invasion of the Philippines in DEC 1941 and the fall of Manila on 2 JAN 1942, the defending U.S. and Filipino troops withdrew to Bataan, where the combined forces fought a fierce defensive action.
24 DECEMBER 1814 – TREATY OF GHENT SIGNED, ENDING THE WAR OF 1812
After negotiations in Ghent, Belgium, British and U.S. diplomats signed a treaty to end the War of 1812. Although militarily inconclusive, the war has been dubbed America’s “Second War of Independence.”

On 18 JUN 1778, LTG Sir Henry Clinton left Philadelphia and led 10,000 of his men on an overland march to New York City, with GEN George Washington in close pursuit, looking for an opportunity to strike the British.
On this day in 1865, the last sizeable contingent of Confederate forces surrender to Union troops at Fort Towson, Oklahoma. The Rebels are commanded by Stand Watie, a Cherokee and the only Native American Confederate general of the Civil War.

On this day in 1865, Union forces occupying Texas issue General Order No 3 thereby freeing all slaves in the former Confederate state in accordance with the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. The occasion will later be celebrated as Juneteenth.

On this day in 1861, America's Civil War begins as Confederate guns open fire on Fort Sumter. No one dies in the two-day bombardment, but hundreds of thousands will perish in the resulting four-year conflict.
Today in 1864, more than 300 Union prisoners-of-war are massacred by Confederate troops following the capture of Fort Pillow, Tennessee. Most of the victims are Black soldiers. William T Sherman condemns the atrocity and declares the Rebels "barbarians."

3 APRIL 1865 – FALL OF RICHMOND
After four years of war, the Confederate capital of Richmond fell to Union forces on 3 APR 1865, shortly after the Union captured nearby Petersburg. GEN Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse a week later, on 9 APR.
