On this date in 1999, Firefighter Anthony S. Phillips, Sr. Eng. 10, died of injuries sustained in a fire at 3146 Cherry Rd. NE, Box 6178.
Firefighter Louis J. Matthews, Engine 26, succcumbed the following day to injuries sustained at the same fire.

Update: Box Alarm - 1200 Block of U Street NW - Fire was showing from rear of structure.
Small fire found in kitchen upon arrival, extinguished quickly along with sprinkler activation.
No extension to adjacent commercial units.
No injuries.
Cause of fire is accidental.
