May 30–31, 1999. We remember @dcfireems Firefighters Anthony Phillips (E10) and Louis Matthews (E26), lost at Box 6178, 3146 Cherry Rd NE. Their sacrifice and the lessons learned forever changed the fire service. Never Forgotten.

On this date in 1999, Firefighter Anthony S. Phillips, Sr. Eng. 10, died of injuries sustained in a fire at 3146 Cherry Rd. NE, Box 6178.

Firefighter Louis J. Matthews, Engine 26, succcumbed the following day to injuries sustained at the same fire.

Update: Box Alarm - 1200 Block of U Street NW - Fire was showing from rear of structure.

Small fire found in kitchen upon arrival, extinguished quickly along with sprinkler activation.

No extension to adjacent commercial units.

No injuries.

Cause of fire is accidental.

Update 2 Alarm Fire 1700 block 1st St NW. Interior attack in progress on both 2 story dwellings. Fire rear porches knocked down and rear porch of fire building collapsed. Bulk of fire knocked down. #DCsBravest

Update 2 Alarm Fire 1700 block 1st St NW. Continuing to open up and extinguish numerous hotspots. Had considerable fire in 2 houses with some extension to 2 others. 3 civilians being evaluated for non life threatening conditions. #DCsBravest

Flags, badges, and coins have been given to the families of Lt. Robert J. Heaney and Technician Stephen W. Shipp, Jr. at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Ceremony in Emmitsburg, MD.

As our Nation pauses and they are honored and remembered, we will never forget them.

Luminary bags for Lt. Robert J. Heaney and Technician Stephen W. Shipp, Jr. will be lit by their families prior to tonight’s 7:30 pm @NFFF_News Candlelight Service.

May the lights from their candles never be extinguished as we will never forget their sacrifice and service.

This weekend, our Nation will pause to honor and remember fallen firefighters across the country, who died in the Line of Duty, in 2025 and previous years at the @NFFF_News Memorial Weekend.

On April 15th, 2025, Firefighter Technician Stephen Shipp Jr., Truck Co. 7, died in the Line of Duty from an occupational illness. Never Forget.

7 years ago today, we lost a true hero—Christopher Slutman—who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in Afghanistan.

FDNY Ladder 17 → Ladder 27. U.S. Marine Corps, two tours.
In 2013, he rescued a trapped civilian—earning an FDNY medal.
