Rise and Kill First: The Secret History of Israel’s Targeted Assassinations by Ronen Bergman (2018)

Poisoned toothpaste. Exploding cell phones. PETN and other military-grade explosives hidden inside everyday objects. Assassination teams traveling the world on forged passports. Secret front companies built to hide who ordered the killings. According to Ronen Bergman’s investigation, Israel has carried out at least 2,700 targeted killings since 1948 more than any other Western nation since World War II.

Based on roughly 1,000 interviews with Israeli prime ministers, Mossad directors, Shin Bet chiefs, military commanders, intelligence officers, and the assassins themselves, Rise and Kill First reveals a world where targeted killing evolved from an emergency measure into a permanent instrument of state policy.

One of the book’s most chilling accounts involves Wadie Haddad, the Palestinian militant accused of organizing international airline hijackings. According to Bergman’s sources, Mossad infiltrated Haddad’s inner circle and secretly replaced his toothpaste with an identical tube containing a slow-acting toxin. Every time he brushed his teeth, microscopic amounts entered his body through his gums and mucous membranes. Over months, his health deteriorated while doctors searched unsuccessfully for an explanation. By the time he died, the operation had left almost no trace.

Another famous operation targeted Yahya Ayyash, Hamas’s chief bomb-maker known as “The Engineer.” Israeli intelligence arranged for a trusted associate to deliver him a cellular phone rigged with explosives. Agents monitored the device and waited until he answered a call. Once they confirmed it was him on the line, they remotely detonated it, killing him instantly.

Bergman repeatedly describes how intelligence services developed methods for concealing powerful explosives including PETN and other military-grade compounds inside telephones, electronics, vehicles, mail, and ordinary objects. Targets often carried, answered, or activated the very devices that would later be used to kill them.

Perhaps most shocking is the infrastructure behind the operations. The book details shell companies, fake businesses, forged identities, covert bank accounts, safe houses, and front organizations established across multiple countries. Entire companies existed solely to rent apartments, acquire vehicles, move money, establish cover stories, and ensure that if an operation was exposed, the trail often stopped long before reaching those who ordered it.

The 2010 assassination of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh in Dubai involved a 27-person Mossad team using forged European passports while posing as tourists, athletes, and business travelers. Security cameras captured much of the operation as agents tracked him through a luxury hotel before killing him and escaping the country.

Some of the book’s most dramatic chapters involve direct commando raids. During Operation Spring of Youth in Beirut, future Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak reportedly disguised himself as a woman while Israeli commandos hunted senior Palestinian leaders in their apartments.

In 1988, Israeli forces carried out one of their most ambitious operations against Abu Jihad, one of the founders of Fatah and a top lieutenant of Yasser Arafat. Naval commandos, intelligence teams, surveillance units, and support personnel coordinated across hundreds of miles to reach Tunisia. Once inside his residence, the attackers fired dozens of rounds at close range, killing him in front of his family.

A major portion of the book focuses on the global manhunt launched after the murder of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics. For years, Israeli teams pursued suspected members of Black September and related groups across Europe and the Middle East using surveillance networks, safe houses, letter bombs, car bombs, and covert assassination squads.

Yet the campaign also produced some of its most infamous mistakes. In the 1973 Lillehammer affair, Mossad agents mistakenly identified an innocent Moroccan waiter, Ahmed Bouchiki, as a terrorist mastermind and shot him to death in Norway. The killing triggered international outrage and exposed parts of the operation.

The book also recounts the assassination of Herbert Cukurs, a Latvian aviator accused of participating in the Holocaust. Mossad agents lured him to Uruguay under a false business pretense, killed him in a rented house, and left documents with the body explaining why he had been targeted. The operation was designed not only to eliminate a man, but to send a message.

Bergman also describes assassination campaigns against Iranian nuclear scientists, including operations involving motorcycle teams that approached moving vehicles, attached magnetic bombs, and disappeared into traffic seconds later.

One of the book’s most extraordinary failures was the 1997 attempt to assassinate Hamas leader Khaled Mashal in Jordan. Mossad operatives approached him on a public street and sprayed a fast-acting poison near his ear. The operation collapsed almost immediately when the agents were captured. Jordan’s king demanded answers, a diplomatic crisis erupted, and Israel was ultimately forced to provide the antidote that saved Mashal’s life. As part of the resolution, Israel later released imprisoned Hamas founder Ahmed Yassin.

Bergman also covers the Bus 300 affair, one of the most controversial episodes in Israeli intelligence history. Two Palestinian hijackers survived a rescue operation and were taken into custody alive. They later died while in Israeli hands, and the subsequent cover-up became a major national scandal.

Perhaps the most startling revelations concern repeated efforts to eliminate Arafat. According to Bergman, senior officials including future Prime Minister Ariel Sharon repeatedly pushed for his assassination. One proposed strike reportedly involved shooting down an aircraft believed to be carrying him. The operation was halted only after intelligence revealed wounded Palestinian children were among the passengers. Bergman also discusses long-standing suspicions surrounding Arafat’s 2004 death, though he stops short of making a definitive claim.

The book covers letter bombs, sniper attacks, booby-trapped telephones, armed drones, helicopter strikes, motorcycle assassins, car bombs, covert poisonings, and some of the largest targeted killing campaigns in modern history. During the Second Intifada, intelligence analysts, drone operators, pilots, and military commanders worked together to identify, track, and strike targets with unprecedented speed.

What makes Rise and Kill First so disturbing is that much of the story comes directly from the people who planned, approved, and carried out the operations. Bergman presents a history of secret wars built on deception, front companies, forged identities, covert technologies, intelligence failures, civilian casualties, and thousands of deaths. Rather than portraying assassination as a clean solution, he shows how it became one of the defining tools of modern intelligence warfare and the moral, political, and human costs that followed.
