I strongly disagree with this interpretation because it is not what Jesus actually said, and at some point we must stop making the text say what our sermon needs it to say.

Jesus never said the 99 sheep represented the Pharisees, never said they were people who thought they had no need of salvation, and certainly never said the 1 was the only one who “made it.” In Luke 15:4, Jesus explicitly says one sheep was lost, and the shepherd went after that which was lost “until he find it.”

The structure is simple: 100 sheep, 1 becomes lost, 99 remain, the shepherd searches for the 1, finds it, and rejoices. You cannot transform the 99 into unsaved Pharisees without adding something to the text that Jesus never said.

Yes, the Pharisees are absolutely part of the context because they complained that Jesus received sinners, but being the audience Jesus confronted does not automatically make them the symbolic identity of the 99.

If anything, Jesus later gives a much clearer picture of the self righteous attitude in the older brother of the prodigal son story. The point of the sheep is the Shepherd’s concern for the lost and heaven’s joy when the lost sinner repents. We can debate what “ninety nine just persons which need no repentance” means, but we cannot casually erase the words of Christ because another interpretation sounds more dramatic.

Shouting an interpretation, adding music, and making it sound profound does not turn it into exegesis. Scripture does not need our imagination to make it powerful. Preach what Jesus said, not what makes the sermon sound impressive.
