Three CMPDI Officers Earn “GRIHA Certified Professional” Certification

Shri Chaudhari Shivraj Singh, CMD, CMPDI, and Shri Rajeev Kumar Sinha, D(T/ES), appreciated Shri V. M. Kumar, Chief Manager (Civil); Shri Farah Nawaz, Senior Manager (Civil); and Shri Bhaskar Tiwari, Deputy Manager (Civil), CMPDI, for successfully obtaining the GRIHA Certified Professional (GRIHA CP) Certification – 2026.

The GRIHA Certified Professional (GRIHA CP) is a credential awarded by the GRIHA Council to individuals who demonstrate a thorough understanding of the GRIHA framework. This certification equips professionals to work effectively on green building projects, assist in GRIHA documentation, and promote sustainable development practices in the built environment.

This accomplishment further strengthens CMPDI’s capabilities in delivering sustainable, environmentally responsible, and future-ready engineering and consultancy solutions for the coal and infrastructure sectors.

It is also pertinent to mention that the CMPDI RI-IV, Nagpur office building, constructed in 2021, is GRIHA-accredited

CMPDI is proud to share the successful approval of the Revised Mining Plan (RMP) and Mine Closure Plan (MCP) for the Sarisatolli Coal Mine by the Ministry of Coal.

The assignment presented significant technical and regulatory challenges, involving comprehensive geological evaluation, optimization of the mine plan, preparation of a scientifically robust Mine Closure Plan, and meticulous compliance with statutory requirements through multiple rounds of technical scrutiny.

Successfully addressing these complexities required extensive domain expertise, close coordination, and sustained efforts from multidisciplinary teams.

This achievement reinforces CMPDI's commitment to delivering technically sound, sustainable, and regulatory-compliant mine planning solutions that support the responsible development of India's coal sector.

CMPDI is deploying Drone Technology to Track Sand Replenishment in Rajasthan’s Ghats.

Rajasthan’s sand ghats play a vital role in local livelihoods, river health, and groundwater recharge. To better understand how monsoon rains reshape these important landscapes, CMPDI is conducting a fast, accurate sand-replenishment study in three districts of Rajasthan state i.e Pali, Jalore, and Kota using advanced drone surveys.

What we’re doing
• Pre-monsoon and post-monsoon drone surveys over selected sand ghats to measure volume changes and deposition patterns.
• High-resolution orthomosaics and digital elevation models (DEMs) produced from drone photogrammetry.
• KML mapping and GIS analysis to quantify sand gain or loss and identify hotspot areas requiring intervention.

Why drones?

• Speed: Large areas surveyed in hours instead of days or weeks with conventional methods.
• Accuracy: Centimetre-level elevation data and precise volumetric calculations from DEM differencing.
• Safety and access: Remote, difficult-to-reach ghats can be monitored without endangering field teams.
• Cost-efficiency: Lower manpower and field time compared with traditional cross-section surveys.

Review of Exploration progress

The Head of Department (Exploration), CMPDI, RI‑VII, Bhubaneswar, accompanied by his team and officials from Kosala Camp, inspected the newly commissioned HT‑5 and HT‑22 drilling rigs at the Kandhanal site, Patrapada, Chhendipada Block to review departmental exploration progress.

Thereafter, he visited outsourced drilling projects being executed under external consultancy at Kudanali–Lubri Block (on behalf of GMDC) and Saradhapur–Jalatap Block (for JSL). During these visits he reviewed ongoing drilling activities, held discussions with field staff and agency representatives, and emphasized the importance of close coordination, strict adherence to technical standards, and timely completion of the assigned consultancy works.

Meeting Held to Finalise BTR-2 Report on Fugitive Emissions from Coal Mines

CMPDI, in collaboration with Indian Institute of Technology (ISM) Dhanbad, is undertaking the study on “Assessing Fugitive Emissions from Coal Mines & Fuel Transformation for (Biennial Transparency Report)BTR-2 and BTR-3”.

In continuation of this work, a meeting of CMPDI officials and Dr. A. K. Singh, Scientist (retd.), CIMFR was held in the Conference Hall of CMPDI, RI-II, Dhanbad, on 14.07.2026 and 15.07.2026. The meeting focused on deliberations regarding finalisation of BTR-2 report for onward submission to MoEF&CC.

Discussions also emphasized alignment with Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) guidelines and a critical review of inputs submitted under BTR-1, with the objective of enhancing the accuracy, consistency, and transparency of data as well as samples collection and analysis for estimation of Emission Factors to be utilised in BTR-3 report.

CMPDI Revises Mining Plan for Amelia Coal Mine to Support Energy Security

CMPDI successfully Revised the Mining Plan and Mine Closure Plan for Amelia Coal Mine (5.60 MTPA) of M/s THDC India Limited, Singrauli and submitted it to the Ministry of Coal through the Single Window Clearance System (SWCS) Portal following expert review by the Peer Mining Plan Preparing Agency (MPPA).

The revised mining plan incorporate both Opencast & Underground Method and expected to Supply Coal to Khurja STTP, Bulandshahar and meet growing energy requirements of Uttar Pradesh.

The revision of the mining plan reflects CMPDI's technical excellence, agility, and commitment to operationalize critical mining projects that support enhanced coal production and strengthen energy security

CMPDI holds Stakeholder Consultation and Awareness Programme on CDLP at Samaleswari OCP

CMPDI, Regional Institute‑VII, Bhubaneswar organised a Stakeholder Consultation and Awareness Programme at Samaleswari Open Cast Project (OCP) on 13th July, 2026 to publicise and support implementation of the Mining Plan & Mine Closure Guidelines–2025 issued by the Ministry of Coal, Government of India.

About 100 participants, including villagers, Panchayat representatives, Self‑Help Groups (SHGs) and other local stakeholders attended the programme and engaged actively in discussions on the Community Development and Livelihood Plan (CDLP). The session emphasised a people‑centric approach to mine closure, inviting participants to share development priorities, livelihood aspirations and community needs to inform sustainable post‑mining interventions.

Speakers highlighted the CDLP’s role in fostering community participation, promoting resilient livelihood options and ensuring scientific, long‑term planning for areas affected by mining. The consultation underscored that locally‑driven strategies and stakeholder ownership are critical to creating enduring socio‑economic benefits beyond the life of the mine.

Through such participatory engagements, CMPDI reaffirms its commitment to supporting the Ministry of Coal’s vision of integrating community participation, sustainable livelihoods and scientific planning into mine closure processes ensuring development outcomes that benefit present and future generations.

Stakeholders' Meet on Model Tender Document for Selection of CBM Developer (CBMD) in Coal India Limited (CIL) Leasehold Areas

CMPDI organized a Stakeholders' Meet on 15th July, 2026 through video conferencing under the chairmanship of Shri Ajay Kumar, Director (T/ P&D). The meeting was convened to obtain feedback from prospective bidders on the Model Tender Document for Selection of Coal Bed Methane Developers (CBMDs) in Coal India Limited (CIL) leasehold areas.

During the meeting, CMPDI presented an overview of the proposed CBM blocks identified within CIL leasehold areas that are planned to be offered for CBM development. The presentation highlighted the salient features of the proposed bidding framework, including the eligibility criteria, minimum work programme, payment mechanism, and other key provisions of the tender document.

The prospective bidders were invited to share their suggestions and observations to further strengthen the bidding framework and ensure a transparent, competitive, and industry-friendly tendering process.

The meeting witnessed active participation from leading organizations in the CBM and hydrocarbon sector, including M/s Reliance Industries Limited, M/s Essar Oil and Gas Exploration and Production Limited (EOGEPL), M/s Prabha Energy Limited (PEL), M/s Oil India Limited (OIL), M/s Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), M/s GAIL (India) Limited, M/s Trans Continental Natural Resources Limited (TNRL), M/s Mining Associates Pvt. Ltd. (MAPL), M/s Mining Tech Consultancy Services Limited (MTCS), and M/s Vedanta-Cairn Oil & Gas Limited.

Representatives from the Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH), Coal India Limited (CIL), and its subsidiaries, Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) and Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), also participated in the deliberations.

The interaction provided a valuable platform for constructive dialogue between the industry and stakeholders, and the suggestions received during the meeting will be duly examined for incorporation, wherever appropriate, in the final tender document.

Stakeholder’s Meet on Proposed Bidding Framework for Commercial Development of Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) in CIL Blocks

CMPDI organized an online Stakeholder’s Meet on 10th July 2026 to seek valuable inputs on the proposed Bidding Framework for the Commercial Development of Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) in Coal India Limited (CIL) blocks.

During the meeting, CMPDI made a comprehensive presentation outlining the proposed Eligibility Conditions and Scope of Work for prospective bidders and technology providers. The deliberations witnessed participation from leading industry stakeholders, including M/s Gainwell India, M/s Kaveri Naptha, M/s John Finlay, M/s Inrus Energy, M/s Power Mech, Shapoorji Pallonji Group, M/s TM Green (Hyderabad), along with renowned international technology providers Ergo Exergy Technologies Inc. (Canada), Neurizer (Australia), and SIM UCG (Russia). Officials from Coal India Limited (CIL), its subsidiaries ECL, SECL, MCL, NCL, and BCGCL also participated in the meeting.

The interactive session provided a constructive platform for stakeholders to share their perspectives and recommendations. Participants appreciated CMPDI's proactive initiative towards developing a robust and transparent bidding framework for the commercial deployment of Underground Coal Gasification.

CMPDI, RI‑VII, Bhubaneswar Organised Field Visit for https://t.co/7OYCP4EScX Geology Students to Talcher Coalfields

CMPDI, RI‑VII, Bhubaneswar as part of the Summer Internship Programme organised a field visit on 11 July, 2026 for https://t.co/7OYCP4EScX. (Geology) students from IIPE, Visakhapatnam; IIEST Shibpur; and Ravenshaw University. The field visit aimed to provide practical exposure to coal exploration, geological mapping, and drilling operations in the Talcher Coalfield.

Students observed detailed geological mapping and exploration techniques at the Kudanali–Lubri Block, gaining hands‑on experience in stratigraphic logging, and sample collection etc,. The group also visited the Kosala Drilling Camp, where CMPDI officials demonstrated drilling procedures, core handling and preservation, logging protocols, and the role of drilling in coal resource evaluation.

Officials provided in‑depth explanations and engaged with students through interactive sessions, enhancing their understanding of field methodology and applied geoscience. The visit successfully bridged classroom theory with real‑world practices, enriching the academic training of participating students.

The programme reflects CMPDI’s ongoing commitment to training the next generation of geoscientists through practical, industry‑oriented learning opportunities.

राजभाषा हिंदी के प्रचार-प्रसार और कार्यालयीन कार्यों में इसके उपयोग को बढ़ावा देने के उद्देश्य से दिनांक 10.07.2026 को सेंट्रल माइन प्लानिंग एंड डिजाइन इंस्टीट्यूट (CMPDI), क्षेत्रीय संस्थान-II, धनबाद में एक दिवसीय कार्यशाला का सफल किया गया।यह कार्यशाला क्षेत्रीय निदेशक श्री घनश्याम एस. गहलोत के अध्यक्षता में संपन्न हुई।

कार्यशाला में मुख्य व्याख्याता के रूप में भारत कोकिंग कोल लिमिटेड (BCCL) मुख्यालय से आमंत्रित श्री अनिरुद्ध नोनिया (अनुवादक, राजभाषा) एवं श्रीमती वंदना देवी (अनुवादक, राजभाषा) उपस्थित हुए। अपने व्याख्यान के दौरान दोनों विशेषज्ञों ने राजभाषा नीति के विभिन्न पहलुओं, सरकारी कामकाज में हिंदी के सरल प्रयोग और तकनीकी अनुवाद की बारीकियों पर अत्यंत व्यावहारिक और ज्ञानवर्धक जानकारियां साझा कीं।

कार्यशाला के दौरान उपस्थित अधिकारियों एवं कर्मचारियों की सहभागिता बढ़ाने के लिए एक शब्दावली प्रतियोगिता का भी आयोजन किया गया। प्रतियोगिता में सभी प्रतिभागियों ने पूरे उत्साह के साथ अपनी प्रतिभा का प्रदर्शन किया।

RD, RI-II, Dhanbad reviews Exploration in South of Damuda Block.

Shri G. S. Ghalot, RD, RI-II, Dhanbad accompanied by HoD(Exploration) RI-II visited the drill site in the South of Damuda Block to review the progress of drilling operations. This outside consultancy project, awarded by M/s Rungta Sons Pvt. Ltd. is being jointly executed by CMPDI and KEMSPL, is expected to contribute to the enhancement of Non-CIL revenue for CMPDI, RI-II.

During the visit, Shri Ghalot interacted with the drilling teams, motivating them to maintain high standards of performance while emphasizing the importance of strict adherence to safety protocols. HoD(Exploration) provided valuable technical guidance to address the geological complexities encountered in the block, ensuring the continued progress of the drilling operations.

A batch of 20 trainee geologists from the 49th OCG Batch-D visited the Coal Characterization Laboratory (CC Lab) at CMPDI (HQ), Ranchi, on 06.07.2026 to gain practical exposure to advanced coal characterization techniques.

During the visit, the trainees were introduced to various state-of-the-art chemical and petrographic analytical techniques employed at the laboratory. They received detailed demonstrations on coal sample preparation involving crushing and pulverizing, followed by sophisticated analyses such as band-by-band analysis, overall seam analysis, Gross Calorific Value (GCV) determination, etc, and microscopic maceral examination using advanced coal petrographic microscopes.

The group also visited CMPDI's Earth Science Museum a state-of-the-art Geological Museum, where geological information, mineral resources, and contemporary mining practices are showcased through interactive audio-visual and 3D displays. The faculty members accompanying the trainees expressed their appreciation to CMPDI for organizing an informative and enriching technical visit.

CMPDI’s CSR Project “Dhwani” is transforming young lives through the gift of hearing.

The CMPDI, RI-IV, Nagpur team, led by Shri Vispi N. Dupattawala, Regional Director, RI-IV, visited AIIMS Nagpur to review the progress of its CSR project, “Dhwani,” which provides full sponsorship for cochlear implant treatment to 13 children aged seven years or below from BPL/EWS families at AIIMS Nagpur.

During the visit, the team interacted with beneficiary children and their families, witnessing the life-changing impact of the initiative. So far, four (O4) cochlear implant surgeries have been successfully completed, giving children the precious gift of hearing and opening new opportunities for speech, learning, and social inclusion.

The most touching moment of the visit was the first activation ("switch-on") of a cochlear implant, when a child heard sound for the very first time, an unforgettable experience filled with joy and emotion for the family. The team also observed Auditory Verbal Therapy (AVT) sessions, where children are learning to recognize sounds and develop speech after implantation.

The AIIMS Nagpur team appreciated CMPDI's commitment to this CSR initiative, acknowledging its significant contribution to transforming young lives and enabling children with hearing impairment to move confidently towards social inclusion and a brighter future.

CMPDI is pleased to announce that the e-learning course "Understanding Mine Closure Plans and Sustainability" is now available on the iGOT Karmayogi Portal.

Authored and developed by CMPDI, the course is based on the Ministry of Coal’s, Mine Closure Guidelines-2025, the course provides practical insights into mine closure planning, financial assurance, sustainability, repurposing of mined-out land, Community Development & Livelihood Plans (CDLP), and a Just Transition.

Shri Rajeev Kumar Sinha, Director (T/ES), CMPDI, formally inaugurated the course and added that this is a significant step toward strengthening capacity and promoting sustainable and responsible mining practices in India.

CMD, CMPDI Visits Kosala Exploration Camp

Shri Chaudhari Shivraj Singh, CMD, CMPDI, along with his team, visited the Kosala Exploration Camp and inspected the drill rigs in operation. During the visit, Shri Singh reviewed the drilling action plan and the progress of ongoing exploration activities. He also interacted with the drilling crews, appreciated their dedication and hard work, and encouraged them to strive for higher productivity and operational excellence. Assuring the team of the management's support, he stated that the issues and challenges faced at the camp would be addressed on priority to ensure smooth and efficient operations.
