Today’s story behind the numbers: This #FBI and the takedown of a prolific predator who used “sextortion” to terrorize children and families across the country.

Ramanan Pathmanathan of Toronto, Canada, spent years hunting down children to exploit. He ultimately contacted at least 145 young girls and boys over social media.

Posing as a teen from New Jersey, Pathmanathan coerced these minors into exposing themselves and engaging in sex acts with their siblings, other relatives, and even dogs. He then recorded these activities. Pathmanathan threatened to send revealing images to their family and friends if the children refused his demands. Some victims were as young as six years old.

Pathmanathan was recently given a 33-year prison term in the U.S., following a massive investigation by the @FBIHouston Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force and the Texas Department of Public Safety.

This FBI continues our historic, nationwide crackdown on violent crimes against children and child abusers—arresting nearly 3,000 child predators and human traffickers since last year (up 70%) and identifying or locating nearly 7,000 child victims (up 144%).
