I have just learned that my old friend, Fr. Kenneth Baker, S.J. died on August 6th. As both an orthodox Jesuit and longtime editor of the Homiletic and Pastoral Review, he was a brave upholder of Catholic truth. Of your charity, please pray for the repose of his soul.
@foymeetsworld Good Lord, man. Grow a beard and have done. You're 39 years old.
This perpetual affectation of stubble gives you the look of an adolescent and makes you appear an undignified poseur. How am I to take you seriously as you cultivate this beatnik persona?
@carlosc6859@isaacrrr7 He never said anything remotely like that. Stop watching Venezuelan newscasts.
My guess is that after the midterms we invade. They have no air cover or ground support.
@AlternatNews The CIA have released no such statement. Russia is losing its own war. China is in economic hardship and has been kicked out of Panama, Venezuela, and SA.
@MaxOtto136697@isaacrrr7 It's a conflict until troops hit the ground. Then it's a war. Probably waiting for after the midterms to pull the trigger. Nothing to lose for Trump either way after that.
@ChrisMurphyCT What hemorrhaging loses. All are lamentable but you're obviously not built for the realities of life if you think we're taking huge casualties.
It is being reported that former US President Joe Biden‘s cancer has spread and is causing him significant pain. Please pray for him and his family. Lord have mercy.
Muslim women: "I am French"
French Chad: "You're not French, you have an Arab head. Don't say you're French when you're dressed as an 8th-century Bedouin"
Someone get the king his crown 🇫🇷
@VulcanVixen1@laralogan Bren, the fact that it happened brings everything into question because we don't know that it's one bad company. You make it sound like the man at some point of life loses legal possession of his organs. Further, you seem to justify it based on a brain injury due to drug use.
On this day in 1777, an old farmer-general got his leg shattered by a musket ball, propped himself against a tree, lit his pipe, and kept directing one of the bloodiest battles of the entire Revolution as if he had all the time in the world.
His name was Nicholas Herkimer, a plain-spoken German-American militia commander in the Mohawk Valley. When the British and their Loyalist and Iroquois allies laid siege to Fort Stanwix, Herkimer marched roughly 800 local militiamen and some Oneida allies to break the siege. They never got there. In a deep, wooded ravine near Oriskany, the enemy sprang a perfect ambush, letting the head of the column pass and then slamming the trap shut on men packed into the low ground with nowhere to run.
What followed was not a battle so much as a knife fight in the woods. Early on, Herkimer was hit, the ball smashing his leg and killing his horse. Instead of being carried off, he had his men prop him against a tree, and there he sat, calmly smoking his pipe and giving orders while the fighting raged hand to hand around him. When a sudden thunderstorm crashed down and forced a pause, he used the time to reorganize his shattered men, teaching them to fight in pairs so a warrior could not rush a man in the instant he was reloading.
The cost was horrific. Something like half of Herkimer's force was killed, wounded, or captured. As a battle it was arguably a British-Loyalist victory, but it was a gutting one, and while it raged, the fort's garrison sortied out and looted the enemy camp, further wrecking the besiegers' morale. Oriskany helped doom the whole western British thrust, which collapsed weeks later, feeding the American triumph at Saratoga.
Herkimer did not live to see it. His wounded leg was amputated in a botched operation, and he bled to death about ten days later, reportedly reading his Bible calmly to the end. A dying farmer under a tree with a pipe in his teeth, refusing to leave his men. That is the image the Mohawk Valley never forgot.
