Hasbro shareholders have filed a 78-page lawsuit accusing the company and Wizards of the Coast of deliberately overprinting Magic: The Gathering and misleading investors to prop up short-term revenue.
The most explosive allegation: Magic 30th Anniversary Edition boxes, costing $999, which Hasbro claimed “sold out in 30 minutes,” allegedly didn’t sell out at all. Former employees say Wizards cut off sales early, marked the product “out of stock,” and later dumped unsold boxes in a Texas landfill.
Six former employees support the claims, including testimony that Wizards had a standing protocol to fake sellouts if launches underperformed.
The lawsuit also describes “Project Parachute,” an internal strategy where Magic was repeatedly used as an emergency cash machine, rushing reprint-heavy sets to cover losses elsewhere inside Hasbro.
What this means: the flooded Magic market wasn’t an accident... it was policy. Oversaturation killed scarcity, crushed resale value, and broke trust. Until Hasbro is forced to change how it prints, modern sealed remains a risky hold.
