Families are being blocked from contacting loved ones in ICE detention.

A woman called to set up communication for a detainee but didn’t have their A-number… the unique ID needed to deposit money, send letters, or even contact them.

ICE’s response: “No ma’am, we can’t give that out. There is no other way. We can’t help.”

The detainee can’t call out without money. The family can’t reach them. ICE refuses to intervene. It’s a complete dead end.

In any normal jail, families can look up someone online, call the facility, deposit money, send mail, and get basic information even if the detainee hasn’t made the first call. ICE blocks all of that. Families are left completely in the dark.

The consequences are terrifying. Detainees, including children, can go days or weeks without any contact.

ICE admits, “I would hope they would contact me, because I wouldn’t have a choice.”

That is policy, not accident.

Children are given A-numbers too, and families often cannot access them. Communication depends entirely on the child calling out… without money, instructions, or even knowing who to call.

This is deliberate isolation. Families are blocked from connecting with detainees, from sending support, and from ensuring their safety. In any other detention system, this would trigger lawsuits and investigations. Here, it is official policy.

This is not bureaucratic inefficiency. It is cruel, dangerous, and intentional.
