📢 ECPS Report
🧩 Virtual Workshop Series / Session 13: Constructing and Deconstructing the People in Theory and Praxis
⚡️ This session examined one of the most contested concepts in contemporary political theory and practice: “the people.” At a time when populist mobilization, democratic innovation, and struggles over representation are reshaping politics worldwide, the session explored how “the people” is constructed, invoked, and institutionalized across diverse political contexts.
⚡️ Bringing together interdisciplinary perspectives from political theory, ethnopolitics, social movement studies, and international advocacy, the workshop analyzed competing visions of popular sovereignty, direct democracy, and diplomatic representation—particularly in settings marked by ethnic division, grassroots mobilization, and the marginalization of stateless or unrepresented communities. Through comparative discussions ranging from post-conflict political orders and assembly-based democratic experiments to the exclusion embedded in international diplomacy, the session highlighted the evolving and contested meanings of democratic representation in contemporary politics.
🎓 Chaired by Dr. Leila Alieva (@leilaalieva -- Oxford School for Global and Area Studies, University of Oxford)
💬 Discussants: Assoc. Prof. Christopher N. Magno (Gannon University) & Dr. Amedeo Varriale (@varriale_amedeo -- University of East London)
⁉️How is “the people” imagined, constructed, institutionalized, and contested across different political arenas?
🔹 Assist. Prof. Jasmin Hasanović (@JHasanovich) examined Bosnia and Herzegovina’s post-Dayton order, showing how inter-ethnic, intra-ethnic, and cross-ethnic populisms shape the political construction of “the people.”
🔹 Dr. Sixtine Van Outryve explored how activists in France’s Yellow Vests movement sought to move beyond protest by institutionalizing assembly-based direct democracy and rethinking how citizens may govern themselves.
🔹 Nieves Fernanda Cancela Sánchez reimagined diplomatic representation as a democratic question, highlighting how unrepresented nations, Indigenous peoples, and marginalized communities remain excluded from meaningful participation in international diplomacy.
🧠 The session offered a rich interdisciplinary exchange on populism, democratic innovation, sovereignty, participation, and political inclusion across local, national, and international levels.

🧭 Why This Session Matters: As debates over populism, sovereignty, and democratic legitimacy intensify, understanding how “the people” is constructed—and contested—has become essential. Session 13 illuminates the theoretical foundations and real-world practices that shape collective political identities, offering critical insights into the future of democratic participation and representation in an increasingly fragmented world.

Macron: "U EU nema mjesta za negatore genocida". Osim ako negatori genocida tu istu EU opskrbe litijumom. Ili slave neonacizam. Ili negiraju genocid u Gazi. Onda ima.
For the progressive Italian newspaper Domani on Bosnia and Herzegovina, the autocratic tendencies of Milorad Dodik and the new type of separatism I like to describe as “postmodern nationalism” https://t.co/EQcGnVR2qk
We were using the term ‘post-Dayton’ wrong. After adopting the seccesionist draft for a new constitution by the Republika Srpska Assembly - if the state institutions fail to protect the constitutional order - it may be used accordingly. Thirty years after - Dayton failed.

It was not only inspiring to present a paper on occasion for the 30th anniversary of the DPA at the Uni of Geneve, and contribute to the research on populism in BiH as it was interesting to present it in front of the ex-High Rep, W. Petritsch, who was one of the keynote speakers
It was a great opportunity to offer an initial insight into the upcoming @FES_SOE Youth Study South East Europe 2024 at the Young @BledStratForum in front of more than 40 young people from all over the world, together with @EmaSmolo last week.
It was such a pleasure to give a first glimpse at the @FES_SOE Youth Study 2024 results at the Young @BledStratForum with @JHasanovich.
Stay tuned for THE comprehensive youth study, coming out very soon!
The second workshop was prepared by @FES_SOE .

Jučer smo na @FPNUNSA uz knjigu prof. dr. @IsmarVolic razgovarali o demokratiji i matematici, o dvije stvari koje - kako kaže @FranjoSarcevic - najviše volimo u našim životima :)
Odlična rasprava, sjajna diskusija.
Hvala #BHAAAS.
