Met with Philippine Foreign Affairs @SecLazaro today to advance a range of bilateral priorities, including in the South China Sea. The United States and Philippines continue to deepen our partnership as we celebrate 80 years of diplomatic relations and 75 years of our Alliance.
On June 4, the world marks 37 years since the Chinese Communist Party ordered its troops to attack thousands of peaceful demonstrators in and around Tiananmen Square. Those who sacrificed to uphold their unalienable rights of free expression and peaceful assembly will be vindicated someday.
The impact of the Tiananmen Square massacre continues to be felt. This June 4th, we remember the victims and those who continue to suffer on their behalf.

The ITN's daredevil trio who captured these images:
Jeremy Thompson: A true top-tier war correspondent. He covered the 1991 Gulf War (experiencing Scud missile attacks firsthand), the Kosovo War, and the Rwandan genocide. He even accompanied British tanks into Basra, Iraq, during the first wave of attacks.
The names of the photographers and sound engineers who accompanied Jeremy Thompson at the time must also be remembered:
Mick Deane – Chief Photographer.
Andy Rex – Sound Engineer.
Mick Deane, in particular, survived the 1989 Beijing Massacre but couldn't escape the 2013 Cairo Massacre. In August 2013, while reporting on the conflict in Cairo, Egypt, he was shot by a military sniper. As he fell, he was still clutching his camera. His last moments were dedicated to his duty as a war photographer.
After the Tiananmen Square Massacre, this tape, secretly filmed and smuggled out of the country by a British ITN war correspondent at great risk, was returned to ITN headquarters in the UK. Due to the length limitations of television news broadcasts, only the most crucial few dozen seconds of footage were cut from the original broadcast. The remaining 99% of the footage was sealed away in an underground archive after the broadcast.
Until recently, through its channel's "digital restoration project," ITN, for the first time, released the complete original tape—without narration, without editing, and including ambient noise—on YouTube.
