David Currie held a French village for 36 hours against everything the trapped German army could throw at him, with a scratch force of tanks, infantry, and guns and almost no sleep, and by holding it he helped seal the escape route out of the Falaise pocket. He won the only Victoria Cross awarded to a Canadian soldier in the entire Normandy campaign, and this is a fitting day for it, because Canada went to war on the 10th of September, and it was Canadians who did some of the hardest fighting to close that trap.

Currie was a major in a Canadian armored regiment in August 1944, in the final act of the Battle of Normandy, the closing of the Falaise pocket that I told you about back then, where the bulk of the German army in France was being surrounded. The village of St-Lambert-sur-Dives sat squarely on one of the last escape roads out of the pocket, and Currie was given the job of taking and holding it to help cork the bottle.

He was handed a small, mixed force, some tanks, some infantry, some anti-tank guns, and no supporting artillery, and told to seize a village full of desperate, trapped Germans fighting to break out. He led the attack in, fought his way to the edge of the village, and dug in. And then he held on. For 36 hours, Currie's little force sat astride the German escape route while the enemy hurled tanks and infantry at them again and again, trying to smash through and get out. Currie was everywhere, directing the defense, personally stalking and knocking out German tanks, rallying his exhausted men through counterattack after counterattack, going without sleep, holding the plug in the bottle by sheer will.

They held. Currie's force inflicted around 800 casualties on the Germans, took over 2,000 prisoners, and kept the escape route blocked, contributing directly to the closing of the pocket and the surrender of the trapped German forces.

For that stand he received the Victoria Cross, the only one given to a Canadian soldier in the whole Normandy campaign, and the only one ever to a member of the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps. There is even a famous photograph, said to be one of the only images ever taken of a man during the action for which he won the VC, showing Currie among his men at St-Lambert. The Canadian major who held the village for a day and a half and helped shut the door on an army.

🗓️ W 1977 r. komunistyczny sąd skazał go za działalność opozycyjną na rok pozbawienia wolności w zawieszeniu oraz grzywnę. Został także zwolniony z pracy na Uniwersytecie im. Adama Mickiewicza.

👉 23 września 1976 r. był jednym z czternastu sygnatariuszy „Apelu do społeczeństwa i władz PRL”, dokumentu założycielskiego KOR. W latach 1978–1981 był współzałożycielem i wykładowcą Towarzystwa Kursów Naukowych.

📣 W 1980 r. włączył się w działalność NSZZ „Solidarność”. W następnym roku wyemigrował do Stanów Zjednoczonych, gdzie objął stanowisko profesora na Uniwersytecie Harvarda.

Pan Bogucki formułuje ostatnio argument z konia, żeby uzasadnić prawo prezydenta do sprawdzania i odmawiania ślubowania sędziom TK. „A co gdyby sejm wybrał konia do TK? Też prezydent miałby przyjąć ślubowania?”

Co z takim argumentem zastosowanym do samego prezydenta? Były wątpliwości co do legalności jego wyboru: błędy w komisjach, być może wadliwe zatwierdzenie przez neo-Izbę SN. Były „wątpliwości co jego życiorysu” - argument, którego sam prezydent używa wobec sędziów.

Pytanie do pana Boguckiego: czy Zgromadzenie Narodowe mogło odmówić zaprzysiężenia prezydenta i uniemożliwić mu objęcie urzędu? Dokładnie tak, jak on robi to sędziom TK?

Jeśli odpowie pan, panie ministrze, że nie mogłoby odmówić, bo nie ma takich kompetencji, to niestety musi pan zmierzyć się z zabójczym argumentem: „a dlaczego nie? A co by było, gdyby Naród wybrał na prezydenta konia? Wtedy też trzeba by tę przysięgę przyjąć?”

Prawnicy argumentują z paragarafów, nie z siodła i uprzęży.

Mam wielką przyjemność, że w Wydawnictwie @OMPkrakow ukaże się moja książka o Pawle Milukowie.

Milukow to jedna z najważniejszych postaci najnowszej historii Rosji. Współtwórca Partii Konstytucyjno-Demokratycznej (Kadetów), minister spraw zagranicznych w Rządzie Tymczasowym, jeden z pierwszych ideologów rosyjskiego antybolszewizmu i jeden z liderów rosyjskiej emigracji (zmarły w 1943 r.). Za życia jak i dzisiaj, we współczesnej Rosji, po 1991 r., wywoływał i wywołuje ostre spory oraz kontrowersje. Postać niezwykle niejednowymiarowa, złożona, nierzadko sprzeczna. Był zarazem intelektualistą, naukowcem, wybitnym historykiem, który swoją ogromną energię poświęcił działalności publicznej, której celem była transformacja Rosji w nowoczesne państwo-mocarstwo liberalno-demokratyczne.

Do rewolucji 1917 r. należał do najpopularniejszych autorów na rosyjskim rynku książki. Jego prace były również tłumaczone i wydawane na Zachodzie, a niektóre z nich wielokrotnie wznawiano w znacznych nakładach, m. in. w języku angielskim, francuskim, niemieckim, czeskim i serbskim. Niewątpliwie, miał znaczny wpływ na kształtowanie się zachodniej myśli politycznej oraz naukowej o Rosji w XX w. Niestety, w Polsce jego twórczość pozostaje mało znana. Jest to tym bardziej paradoksalne, że Milukow miał istotny wpływ na wydarzenia, które kształtowały losy Polski i Polaków na początku XX w. Generalnie, trudno badać i zrozumieć dzieje Rosji XX w. bez poznania aktywności tej postaci.

Biorąc to wszystko pod uwagę, uznałem, że miejsce Milukowa jest właśnie w bibliotece klasyków myśli politycznej a więc w znakomitym Wydawnictwie Ośrodka Myśli Politycznej.
