US Presidents’ Stances on Daylight Saving Time:
Woodrow Wilson (D) endorsed the our first nationwide seasonal DST for WWI in 1918. It was promoted by lobbyists for golf and commerce. Wilson was an excessive golf fanatic, playing long hours in all weather. When the war ended and Congress repealed DST, he vetoed the repeal, and Congress overrode the veto.
Warren Harding (R) requested “voluntary DST” in 1922 for all of DC, whereby everyone was requested to do everything an hour earlier during summer. Harding also loved golf.
Franklin Roosevelt (D) gave us our first permanent DST for WWII in 1942, with support from the Chamber of Commerce. Roosevelt was an avid golfer before he was bound to a wheelchair.
Lyndon Johnson (D) endorsed the first nationalization of DST during peacetime in 1966, with support from golf and commerce lobbies.
Richard Nixon (R) defended permanent Standard Time in 1966 for Iowa farmers (who called it God’s time), but when faced with the Oil Crisis in 1974, he called for the first permanent DST during peacetime.
Jimmy Carter (D) signaled willingness to sign an extension of DST that the Senate approved in 1976, but the House did not approve it. The extension was lobbied by commerce, golf, and candy merchants.
Ronald Reagan (R) endorsed the extension, which Congress approved in 1986.
George Bush Sr (R) created the reminder to check smoke alarm batteries when changing clocks in 1989, with support from advocates for fire safety.
George W Bush (R) endorsed the second extension of DST in 2005, claiming it would save energy. The extension was lobbied by commerce, golf, and candy merchants.
Donald Trump (D) softly supported permanent DST in 2019, softly supported permanent Standard Time for MAHA in 2024, said he was no longer interested in the challenge of finding consensus in March of 2025, then became a strong promoter of permanent DST in April of 2025 immediately following congressional testimony by the National Golf Course Owners Association.

pDST proponents will talk about preference and commerce, but I have yet to hear any argument using basic human biology:
1) Our circadian rhythm is greater than 24 hours (about 24.2h)- therefore,
2) We need a resetting influence that tends to shorten it back to 24.0h
3) Light in the AM shortens our circadian rhythm back to 24 hours
4) Light in the PM lengthens our circadian rhythm even more
pDST takes away light precisely at the time of day where we need it to shorten our circadian rhythm and puts it at the time of day where it does the most harm (makes it longer)
No wonder western portions of time-zones have more cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer rates than those on the eastern portion of a time zone where sunlight in the AM is maximized.
Modern humans haven’t somehow changed beyond the need for solar time.
One of the most fascinating studies on this question took people from modern society, removed electric lighting, and had them live outdoors for just one week. Their circadian rhythms rapidly shifted to align with the natural light-dark cycle. They began awakening shortly after sunrise, not at some arbitrary clock time.
This mirrors what is seen in hunter-gatherer populations living without electricity: the human circadian system naturally entrains to the sun, not the clock.
That is exactly why permanent Daylight Saving Time is biologically problematic. It delays sunrise by an hour while work and school schedules stay largely the same, forcing millions of people to wake farther before sunrise and reducing exposure to the most important circadian light of the day—morning sunlight after awakening.
Our biology follows solar time. Clocks should follow biology, not the other way around.

“Furthermore, we find that after exposure to only natural light, the internal circadian clock synchronizes to solar time such that the beginning of the internal biological night occurs at sunset and the end of the internal biological night occurs before wake time just after sunrise.”
The natural place that we want to be is waking up after the sun comes up.
Daylight saving time forces it before.
@tyder68@5NEWS Don't you love the arrogance of the American public who think they know better than medical and scientific experts, both national and international, that roundly denounce DST? https://t.co/iSx5dEOVel
@MattDevittWX Why would you be posting times for December 1 when the shortest day of the year isn't for another three weeks after that? Seems rather deceptive. Also, end DST. We need permanent Standard Time. Read the science behind time changes. Abolish DST.
“The Sunshine for Our Kids Act offers Congress a commonsense, science-based path forward: ending the disruptive twice-yearly clock changes while choosing the time standard that best supports public health.”
Many want to end the biannual clock changes; permanent daylight saving time (DST) is the wrong solution!
Dr. Wendy Troxel explains how DST misaligns our internal clocks from the natural light-dark cycle, with important consequences for sleep and health.

@TerribleMaps@Taylor13inIndia Whatever New Zealand did to you, there are professionals who can help you process the trauma. Pretending NZ doesn't exist is only going to delay your healing.
Some good news: Since 2024, over 700 independent bookshops have opened. Print book sales have risen in each of the last two years. Denmark and Norway are spending millions to get screens out of schools and bring books back. *This* is what real progress looks like.
