When someone is hyperventilating, they have decreased partial pressure of CO2, causing pH to increase. When someone gives them a paper bag to breathe into, it allows them to re-inhale the CO2 they lost. #LMUphysio
The SA node cells depolarize more quickly than the AV node so the SA node dominates the “pacemaking” of the heart. The AV node has its own rhythm but it takes longer to depolarize, so the SA node has a greater influence on the heart’s rhythm. #LMUphysio
Cardiac muscle cells are involuntary. They are myogenic, meaning they originate in muscle tissue and do not require neural stimulation. This allows our hearts to continue beating on their own with the help of the SA node as the 'pacemaker'! #LMUphysio
Cardiac Output (CO) increases when you have an increased demand for oxygen, such as during exercise. Since CO=Heart Rate x Stroke Volume, it makes sense that heart rate increases during exercise. #LMUphysio
The walls of the left ventricle are thicker and have more muscle than the right because they pump blood to the systemic circulation, while the right ventricle only pumps blood to the pulmonary circuit. #LMUphysio

Tonic receptors fire at a rate proportionate to the stimulus and stop when the stimulus stops. In contrast, phasic receptors imply a change and do not give information on the stimulus’ duration. #LMUphysio

SSRIs are often used to treat depression because they selectively block the reabsorption of serotonin into neurons, leaving more serotonin available to stabilize mood #LMUphysio
Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) increases blood pressure. ACE inhibitors are used to treat people with high blood pressure. They inhibit one of the key enzymes involved in the renin-angiotensin cascade to prevent the increase that ACE typically facilitates. #LMUphysio
ADH and Aldosterone work synergistically to increase blood pressure. ADH increases water reabsorption in the collecting duct using aquaporins while Aldosterone increases salt reabsorption in the distal tubule, causing water to follow. #LMUphysio
The countercurrent multiplier system in the Loop of Henle allows for an overall decrease in the filtrate volume and establishes a vertical osmolarity gradient for the collecting duct, where final urine concentration occurs! #LMUphysio
This week in #LMUPhysio, we learned about the anterior and posterior pituitary. The posterior pituitary is fairly simple and releases oxytocin and ADH, while the anterior pituitary releases several tropic (eg. FSH, LH, ACTH, TSH) and non-tropic hormones (eg. Prolactin).
Although the definition of osmosis is often simplified, it really means the movement of water from a region of lower non-penetrating (NP) solute concentration to an area of higher NP solute concentration. Penetrating solutes are not involved. #LMUphysio
The hypothalamus helps maintain homeostasis through regulating body temperature, releasing hormones, controlling appetite, and managing sleep cycles. For example, the lateral and ventromedial regions of the hypothalamus function to control hunger and satiety. #LMUphysio
