Historic election results in #Botswana!
The Umbrella for Democratic Change #UDC gains majority and its leader @duma_boko will be the likely new president. #BDP, ruling party since independence in 1966, acknowledged defeat.
Peaceful change of government in #Africa under way.
NEW REPUBLIC: The UDC has reached 31 seats in Parliament, allowing them to form a new government.
This is the first change in regimes since Independence in 1966.
Harvard-trained attorney, Duma Boko, is now officially the President-Elect and will proceed to inauguration soon.
For the time being, early election results in Botswana seem to look promising for the opposition (UDC)! Could be challenging for the decade-long reign of the ruling party (BDP). #BotswanaElections2024

South Africa is entering a new political era with the formation of a Government of National Unity (#GNU) between the previously ruling African National Congress (#ANC) and the opposition Democratic Alliance (#DA). This historic coalition, finalized amidst last-minute negotiations, represents a significant compromise from both sides and aims to stabilize governance at both national and provincial levels.
The #GNU comes after the ANC, which secured 40.18% of the national vote, lost its parliamentary majority for the first time since the end of apartheid. The DA, with 21.81% of the vote, has agreed to support President Cyril Ramaphosa’s leadership, marking a shift towards a more collaborative governance model.
