USEN: A YORUBA-SPEAKING COMMUNITY IN EDO STATE
Usen is a historic Yoruba speaking community in Ovia South West Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria, showing once again that Yoruba cultural and linguistic history extends beyond the modern political boundaries of the South West.
According to Usen traditions, the community traces important elements of its history to Ile Ife, the ancient Yoruba center.
The tradition shown here describes an early settlement called Ufe Kekere, or โLittle Ife,โ associated with migrants from Ile Ife. Usen traditions also connect its early royal history with the wider Oduduwa tradition.
What makes Usen particularly interesting is its location.
Today it lies within Edo State, yet its language and traditions preserve connections with the broader Yoruboid cultural and linguistic world.
This is an important reminder that Nigeriaโs present-day state borders are modern administrative creations and should not automatically be treated as ancient ethnic boundaries.
Across Nigeria and Africa, communities developed through centuries of migration, settlement, intermarriage, trade and cultural exchange. Usen represents one of those historical crossroads, preserving a distinct identity while existing alongside neighboring Edo speaking populations.
The history of Usen demonstrates just how diverse the Yoruba and Yoruboid presence in southern Nigeria has been, and why the history of Africa is much deeper than the borders drawn on today's maps.
