Today on the 82nd anniversary of D-Day, we salute all the brave soldiers that fought to save the world and protect our freedom.

Many pro baseball players took part in D-Day, including two future Hall of Famers.

Yogi Berra played one year in the minors in 1943 and then joined the Navy during World War II. He was a gunner's mate assigned to the attack transport USS Bayfield. During the D-Day invasion, Berra manned a landing craft support vessel and was responsible for spraying bullets and rockets across the heavily fortified beach fronts before the troops landed on Omaha Beach. Berra was wounded in the hand by enemy fire; he was later awarded the Purple Heart.

Leon Day, a Hall of Fame player from the Negro Leagues, helped land supplies on Utah Beach six days after the Battle of Normandy took place on D-Day.
