Something just Sha-banged me about Barb in this very few realize that after USS THRESHER SSN-593 the 594 thru I believe 603 (excluding 597, 598-602 Tullibee and George Washingtons) where all slated as SSGNs for Regulus II as follow to HALIBUT SSGN/SSN-587.
The SSGN-594 program was nixed when Polaris proved more effective than surfaced SSGNs and these were reordered as 593s
BUT they were to have a Skipjack Stern (S5W/Single screw). Since BARB II was SSN-596 she could very well have been SSGN-596 weird given SSN-804 is now USS BARB SSGN-804

HAAAA!!!!! Just saw this on the 5th. @USN_Submariner HELP! My new 2 book mini series "Triple Barbed" will be effected (haven't gotten them out just yet but close to Amazon release for book one which is about 220 and 596, and forward aboard the 804!). I run a generation story arc aboard all three Barbs using real events on the 220 and 596 as back drops (Still keep Fluckey skippering 220)!!!!! Friends gave a few hats knowing my close family ties to 596 (My Father was a Mechanical Engineer for Bettis Westinghouse/Submarine Refueling Group and worked on the 596) and my interest in Barb III. THEY ALL HAVE SSN-804!...Now What😆
I almost forgot. There will be one more Virginia-class SSN submarine after Oklahoma...
I would expect her keel to be laid in the next couple years, arriving in the mid to late 2030s to replace USS Jimmy Carter. On April 30, 2025, the Navy awarded Electric Boat a $12 billion contract that included this Virginia-class boat specifically designed for seabed warfare.
