Our hypothesis is that they want to make sure that a DNF always gets a lower score than a driver that finishes the race. And since the lowest possible non-DNF score - even in a sprint - is P1 to P20 which is -19 for 19 positions lost, a DNF needs to be at least -20.
But don’t get us wrong, we also think this is too harsh! We’re just trying to explain why the scores are what they are.
