The hardest part of all this is that my husband never suspected anything. Or at least he has never let me know that he does. He is still the same good man, trusting, decent, who calls me to ask if I’ve already had lunch, who pours juice for the girls, who raises his hands and prays in church with a faith that sometimes fills me with rage because I remember how fake I have been. I have never found strange messages from him. I have never felt disrespected. He has never given me a real reason to take revenge. And that is why my guilt is so much worse. Because if I could say, “I did it because he cheated on me too,” at least I would have some kind of moral alibi, even if it was a poor one. But no. I had a good man in the house.
Sometimes people think these things happen because a woman stopped loving her husband or because the marriage was already destroyed. In my case, that wasn’t true. I do love my husband. I have loved him when he has been sick, when he has cried over financial problems, when he has worried about our daughters, and when he has knelt to pray for this house. I have also admired him.
