It’s very rare for a rider coming up from the Continental level to make such an impact in just 18 months, to develop such a keen tactical sense, and, as he bursts onto the scene, to reveal a personality that makes him a decidedly positive, refreshing addition to the world of cycling.

We needed a story like this. Not only us, but Portugal also needed his story. Afonso is the most deserving winner of any Grand Tour white jerseys in a very long time.
