@cadwaladr4ever @tingserg #PP22 whoa, I can't believe I never heard of this. That is insane. Just the picture kind of brings a new view to the situation. I don't completely agree with your claim, but I'm leaning closer to it now
@tingserg #PP22 I've never thought of it this way, I think it would still be altruistic to help others bc sometimes you sacrifice your own wants. But I think this really changes my perspective, and what is considered altruism
@Lawrenc51239184#PP22 I don't agree. The question reminds me of the phrase beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If the banker is happy, or he believes he is, I think we underestimate the benefit of that state. As somebody said in class ignorance is bliss
@Lawrenc51239184#PP22 I think the citizens have to come first, they need to be the priority because they brought that state into power and keep it's being. It would definitely be nice if everyone could reap the benefits though. Maybe somewhere along the line they can be helped if needed
@nicktimes7#PP22 I was thinking after class that we may not be able to measure happiness among populations bc it's so subjective. One person may be happy in a situation that another may not. Just because one person is happy somewhere doesn't mean that others will be too
@hypeforhobbes#PP22 interesting comparison π€I wonder how much of the political (philosophy) of the past reflects in the present day or in the future?
@suhaanoor @ProfessorDEG #PP22 considering the complexity, and stress of life as a human, the freedom of a bird may be refreshing. No
Birds don't pay taxes or worry about finding jobs, they simply live in nature
@SydSandersss @UBXenos #PP22 another point that came up in conversation was how he still wouldn't approve of how other countries such as England are run. Hobbes was so specific and detailed about how government should it makes you wonder if he was on to something
#PP22 I recently tried explaining to somebody Hobbes ideas about being in a state of war. they almost immediately pointed out how we are divided today, much like what Hobbes claimed would happen
#PP22 I don't think we should do a hard reset of our government, but it makes you wonder what else we can do better. I think part of this course is relating to modern times, which is especially easy when the similarity is right in front of us π
#PP22 it's always let's "try" and maintain peace but act as prudently as possible. I feel like working for the greater good has been lost especially in modern politics especially, but we see it in history and the philosophy of politics too
#PP22 why is it that almost all the time in politics/political philosophy we see emphasis on the negatives? I don't remember ever spending time have people work together to achieve pleasure, happiness, or anything else. (1/2)
@WiesmoreJames#PP22 I don't know if this is relevant or not but I'd be curious as to the meme equivalent from centuries ago. Obviously not political cartoons what art form was used to convey political messages or for entertainment?
@cadwaladr4ever #PP22 Humans will always want things and want to avoid other things, but I don't know if that means we can never have complete happiness. I don't have a strong argument for this, but saying that it's unattainable feels wrong
@ppdood67 True... I think that's part of the strategy the melians used when saying the dialogue should be private and not in public for the Melian people to see and hear. Idk what I would prefer, but I would definitely want a say in whatever my future is #PP22
But I suppose that ethics are kind of like building blocks and political philosophy as well as other philosophical concepts build off of each other #PP22
Last semester I took ethics with @ProfessorDEG and early on we talked about prudence, altruism, normative, and descriptive claims, egoism, etc.
I say that to say this, I never would have thought that the overlap between these courses would be so great. #PP22
