After opening Romans Chapter 13 by talking about respecting authority Paul then pivots to love. He says we have an obligation to love each other. If we do that we will naturally fulfill all the requirements of God’s laws. In vs 9 he says that all of the commandments can be summarized by one statement—love your neighbor as yourself.

If we truly love everyone around us we won’t do any wrong toward them because we will always do what’s best for them and not for us. That is the ideal.

And Paul says it’s important for us to think and act that way because the time is drawing near for Christ to return. No one knows when that day will come but Paul says it’s closer now than ever. Because of that we need to represent Jesus by loving our neighbors just as Jesus loved us.
