@BBGreatMoments@RadioWyatt So put his career up beside let’s say chipper jones. Look at their stats side by side and pick the player you want hitting. Nobody puts chipper in the “greatest hitter “ conversation. Gwynn was a great contact hitter. That’s it
@OleTimeHardball Unpopular opinion …..Tony Gwynn. Great contact hitter. Great human being. Not one of the 25 or maybe even 50 greatest batters of all time. Some put him in the top 5 or 10
@OleTimeHardball Baines was good for a long time. Murphy was great for 6-7 years. Who’s to say which is more deserving? Baines was never considered a feared player. Murphy was.
@BBGreatMoments I’ll take the middle three and roll. Bottom three are all overrated batters because all had relatively low OBP compared to everyone else. Maybe take ichiro for defense. Rose and Gwynn were great players but are both very overrated
@DrSuperhealth@RestrictedDaily@Gitmo99 Pitching for 15 more seasons, Ryan’s era was only 0.42 points higher for his career. Nobody did it like Ryan did for such a long period of time. He doesn’t get enough credit for his unmatched longevity
@TXTwinsfan@LeadfootLemmy@DaleMurphy3 Or his 27 yr career era of 3.19 that was better than Carlton and 0.03 points behind Maddox. Yes you are correct. His walks killed him. He really sucked 🙄
@veganmichael@OleTimeHardball Had roughly the same career era as Carlton, Randy Johnson and Maddox and did it over 27 years. Also pitching 300 innings a season many times. Maybe he wasn’t the reason for so many losses.
@notgaetti I grew up watching TG. Great player and better human. But in no way is he a top even 20 hitter of all time. Honest question. Would you rather have him with is .338 average, .383 OBP and 135 or so career HRs or a guy who hit just over .300, had over a .400 obp and 400+ HRs ?
@TroyPSilva Nobody on this list was a gamechanger like Dale Murphy and Don Mattingly were in the 80s. They had relatively short primes of around 7 yrs but were considered the best in baseball during some of those times. We really need to stop comparing 80s numbers to late 90s 2000s.
@JackBrasfield1@notgaetti So is the object of the game to not strike out or to get on base and drive in runs? TG may be the best contact hitter of all time but he’s probably not in the top 50-100 batters of all time
@Phillip34721295@IsaacNe56565761@robin_guidicy@Kelly_Crull Two MVPs? Was second in the decade of the 80s in HRs and RBIs. Multiple GGs and SSs. Guess that’s just ok and not great. If you want to talk about lack of longevity being great then ok. But for several years he was definitely great
