When firms take political stances, workers sort accordingly. Firm announcements post Dobbs reshaped who applies, who quits, and how politics increasingly organize the labor market, from Pawel Adrjan, Svenja Gudell, @emilynix100, Allison Shrivastava, @JSockin, and @evanpstarr https://t.co/nVGNtzZKE6

Curious why job seekers turn down job offers after EASY interviews? We use ~500K interview reports plus a field experiment to show interview difficulty signals to workers whether the job is a good fit.
Check out the fantastic @JSockin's talk from NBER ORG Econ (w/ @ellliottt).
Finally had a chance to read this excellent paper.
Limitations on data and methods have thus far kept us from understanding what actually happens at the interview stage of the job market.
It looks like signaling is really happening in both directions, with both workers/firms using interviews to eval fit.
If you’re at or near U of Toronto on Nov 12, please try to catch the fantastic @JSockin talking about “Interviews” (joint w/ @ellliottt).
We show that the difficulty of the interview signals to workers whether the job is a good fit.
Perhaps the future of hiring is not AI, but a dating app...
In ~10 days my fantastic co-author @JSockin presents our paper “Interviews” (with @ellliottt) at @nberpubs. We show candidates walk away when an interview feels “too easy”—they assume the firm would hire anyone.
Our paper is out as a CEPR Working Paper, but there’s a paywall. Please use the freely downloadable version on SSRN (which links to CESifo).

🚨1/N Really excited to announce a new working paper, “Interviews” 🚨
We demonstrate that interviews allow workers to screen firms and preview whether the job is a good match for them—using ~500k Glassdoor reports + a randomized field experiment. 🧵
Very excited to announce that Cornell is hiring an AP in Labor Econ, and I will be chairing the recruitment committee. Please spread the word!

Attending NBER SI? At 10:35am tomorrow, @JSockin will present our work with @ellliottt and me showing how your interview process shapes how job seekers form perceptions of you as an employer. These impressions can impact everything from offer acceptance to employee retention!
My second pod! Check out the latest episode of @busscholarship where Avner Ben-Ner and I discuss our recent work showing employees are more satisfied with their jobs when they own part of the company.

A memorable first visit to @HarvardHBS opening up the 10th Empirical Management Conference with why workers reject job offers if they thought the interview was too easy!
Excited for @JSockin to present our paper with @ellliottt at the Empirical Management Conference this week! 📝 We explore how job interviews don’t just assess candidates—they also help workers learn about firms. See you at @HarvardHBS!
