ON THIS DATE IN 2005: This statement was issued by NWS meteorologist Robert Ricks (from the Slidell office) at mid-morning on August 28, 2005.

At the time, Katrina was a category five hurricane in the Gulf, similar in strength to Camille in 1969. It would make landfall the next day as a category three at Waveland Mississippi. 

Some thought this “doomsday” statement was a hoax. Unfortunately, it wasn’t... as everyone would find out the next day.

A huge change is coming to severe weather alerts in Canada 🇨🇦🌪️

Starting as early as Tuesday, Environment Canada plans to begin issuing much smaller storm based Tornado and Severe Thunderstorm Warnings, potentially reducing the number of phones alerted by around 70%.

One important catch: TV and FM radio alerts will still largely rely on the much bigger legacy warning zones, meaning you could hear a warning on the radio for a storm more than 100km away while receiving nothing on your phone.

If that happens, don’t ignore it. Check the actual warning polygon to see if you’re in the storm’s path. A major step forward, but there’s still work to do.

Last years flood. I really do personally think they’ll demolish it. I made this post because this bridge was very important to getting campers out from both this year and last years floods. It doesn’t get enough attention as it should. Anyway, thank you for reading this! <3
