Snopes and Politifact used accusations of right-wing conspiracy theories to shut down reporting on a scandal that could have upended Ilhan Omar’s career and seriously damaged the credibility of "The Squad."

In 2019, Snopes and Politifact "debunked" claims that Omar’s father, Nur Omar Mohamed, was a high-ranking officer in Somalia’s Marxist Barre regime — which invaded Ethiopia in the late ‘70s and was accused of genocide after massacring up to 200,000 people in the late ‘80s.

Both fact-checkers claimed Nur was merely a "teacher trainer" in Somalia before he and his family immigrated to the U.S. Snopes even asserted that linking him to the Siad Barre regime was "based quite literally on nothing but race."

This, despite Somali and Kenyan sources confirming that Omar’s father was a colonel ("an esteemed senior officer") in the Barre regime until its ousting in 1991. For example, after Nur’s death, a Somali diaspora website called Sahan Journal — a non-profit digital newsroom focused on minority communities in Minnesota — ran an obituary praising his long and "esteemed" military career in the Barre regime.

Yet major news outlets — including The New York Times and Reuters — still describe Nur as a "teacher trainer" while he was living in Somalia, relying on Snopes' and Politifact’s shallow, bad-faith fact-checks, which remain inaccurate.

Meanwhile, another Barre regime officer, Yusuf Abdi Ali ("Tukeh"), was recently deported from the U.S. after courts found he committed human rights abuses while serving under Barre.

To be clear, Ilhan Omar isn’t responsible for her father’s decisions when she was a child. What does matter is how the fact-checking industry was able to kill a major political scandal with a thinly sourced, bad-faith "fact check" — protecting Democratic Party interests better than even the best crisis management firms could have ever dreamed.
